Wrestling Alumni Receives Honor & Recognition

Mickey Moran, 2009 UB graduate is being inducted into the Shaler Area High School Hall of Fame today (Glenshaw, PA).  Mickey had a great high school career at Shaler and deserves this honor.  He continued his wrestling and academic career at UB and made our history books in several categories.

Mickey finished his high school career with a 144-26 overall record, which put his in 3rd in all time wins at Shaler.  He also had 90 pins, which also puts him at 3rd in the school’s history.  Over his high school career he had an outstanding 340 takedowns, which puts him in 2nd all-time for Shaler.  He placed in the Pennsylvania AAA State Tournament as both a junior (3rd at 152 pounds) and as a senior (2nd at 160 pounds, losing a heartbreaker in overtime).  At the conclusion of his senior year, he was selected to compete in the prestigious Dapper Dan Classic for the WPIAL Team.  In the Dapper Dan, he beat the highly touted Keegan Mueller of Texas.

At UB, Mickey was a four year starter and two time team captain (2007-2008 and 2008-2009).  Mickey was ranked in the top 20 in the country for three of his years at UB and won the UB Open three times.  He was a 2009 NCAA Division I National Qualifier and two-time MAC place winner.  He also won the New York State Collegiate Championships twice and made the finals three times.  Over his illustrious career, Mickey was named as the MAC Wrestler of the Week several times.  He won 88 matches, which is good for 8th all time at UB.  Also, he finished in 10th for all time career dual meet wins with 37.  He is in 5th place in all time dual meet takedowns with an impressive 109 on his career.

Mickey really excelled in freestyle while he was at UB as well.  In 2007, Mickey became a freestyle All-American with a 7th place showing at the University National Championships.  In 2008, Mickey placed 4th at the University National Championships at 85kg and was again named as a freestyle All-American.  He followed that performance up with a very good showing at the University World
Team Trials, where he placed 3rd in the country.

On a personal note, Mickey is a great person that has done a lot for the University at Buffalo.  He was one of the first wrestlers that I got to know when I came to UB in January of his junior year (2008) and went out of his way to make my transition at UB very smooth.  I was fortunate enough to coach him his last year and a half at UB and develop a great friendship with him after his graduation.  Mickey is currently working at UB as an instructor for the Recreation and Intramural Department and running the CPR program.  We are lucky to have Mickey at UB helping us out.  He has been instrumental in promoting our matches over the last year and he spearheaded (along with Joe Muscarella) the Takedown Cancer Event last year that raised over $38,000 for the Jeff Parker family and cancer research.

Congratulations Mick!  You are very deserving of this great honor!
