174 Pounds Wrestle-Offs
Ron Majerus – Ron is a redshirt sophomore at UB. He was a starter at 165 pounds as a true freshman. His freshman year, he competed in 32 matches. He placed a solid 4th at the MAC Championships and 5th at the NYS Collegiate Tournament. Last year, Ron wrestled at 174 pounds. He only competed in limited action but did place at the Ashland Open. Ron is a very good athlete and one of the most talented wrestlers on the team. Fun Fact: Ron claims to be a better turkey hunter than Mark Lewandowski.
Brian Sheehan – Brian is a fifth-year senior. He transferred to UB last year and was a starter for us at 174 pounds. Brian placed 4th at the MAC Championships last year and also placed at the New York State Collegiate Tournament. He won 17 matches on the year, including a pin in the dual meet with Eastern Michigan when he hit a banana split on his opponent. Brian is a steady wrestler and is looking to complete his career with a bang. Fun Fact: Brian is a very good distance runner and looks like a bobble-head when he runs.
184 Pounds Wrestle-Offs
Jimmy Hamel – Jimmy is a fifth-year senior and has established himself in the UB Record Books in several different categories. Jimmy has been ranked as high as 11th in the country. He is dropping down to 184 pounds after wrestling 197 the past four years. He wants to finish his career as a MAC Champion and All-American. He has been close to accomplishing these goals in the past but this is the year that he will put it all together! He is a two-time MAC Finalist and third place finisher. He has twice qualified for the national tournament. Jimmy has 88 career wins heading into his senior year. He is a mere 12 wins short of becoming the 5th UB Wrestler all time to reach 100 wins. In his career, he has won the Mat Town Open, is a three-time NYS Collegiate Finalist, has placed 3rd-5th-6th at Body Bar, has placed every year at the UB Open with finishes of 2nd-2nd-3rd-5th, and placed 4th at the Oklahoma Gold Classic. Fun Fact: Jimmy has competed on two overseas tours (South Korea in 2009 and Russia in 2010) and beat 2008 South Korean Olympian Byung-Kwan Cho.
Kyle Smith – Kyle is in his second year at UB but this is his first season on the team. He was a section runner-up his senior year. He took his freshman year off from competition and is now looking to compete. Fun Fact: Kyle loves disc golf.
Zach Ward – Zach is a freshman at UB. Zach enters the UB program after spending several years in the New York Super Six Wrestling Club that is based out of our wrestling room. Zach was a state qualifier last year and won over 100 matches in his high school career. Zach wrestled at 171 last year but is growing into 184 pounds nicely. He is one of the hardest workers on our team. Fun Fact: Zach's favorite activity besides wrestling is fishing.
