The clinic and wrestle-offs went very well this weekend. I didn't get to see Coach Catrabone and Coach Duebel's technique sessions but know that they are great technicians. Everyone raved about Coach Jacoutot and he did an amazing job as expected. I was able to watch just about all of Coach Clark's technique session and he shared a lot of little tricks and funky techniques.
Here are the wrestle-off results...
125 - Taylor Golba beat Sean Walton by decision in an exciting match. Taylor was on the attack right off the bat and scored a take down early in the first period. He was aggressive from the opening whistle and looked great on his feet. Both of these wrestlers will push each other in the room and we will surprise some people at 125 pounds!
133 - Kevin Smith beat Justin Farmer by decision. Kevin controlled the entire match and Justin make him work hard for every point. We plan to red-shirt Justin while Kevin is striving to climb to the top of the podium at the national tournament this season. Kevin looks like a big 133 pounder and looked great in all positions.
141 - There was a three wrestler round robin with Chris Conti, Andrew Schutt, and John Crisafulli. John battled hard but Chris and Schutt were each able to pull off falls in their matches with him. Chris and Andrew had a great match. Chris wrestled a very intelligent match and has made huge improvements from last season. Chris beat Andrew and is our starter. This is another weight class that most people do not realize just how good these guys are and we will be winning a lot of matches at 141 pounds this season.
149 - Desi Green showed why he is a preseason All-American selection. Desi looked like he deserved his preseason ranking and much more. He was both confident and dominate. He used a wide array of take downs to major decision both Jimmy Loomis and Wally Maziarz. Jimmy beat Wally in a hard fought match in the morning round to earn the number two spot at 149. Jimmy hit a beautiful peak-out in the match.
157 - Mark Lewandowski looked very impressive in both of his matches. He dominated both Frank Day and Matt Dehney. He major decisioned both of them with solid take downs and he showed some impressive top skills. Deheny pinned Day in the morning round to earn the number two spot at 157 pounds. Mark is talented enough to win a MAC Championship this season; look for a breakout year out of him.
165 - John-Martin Cannon beat Pat Brady by decision. Cannon had to work for every point as Pat battled him tough and got him frustrated. Brady shot a great high crotch in the match. Cannon got off to a slow start but looked better in the third period. Cannon wants to be on the All-American stand as bad as anyone and is capable of being there this season.
174 - In what was probably the most anticipated and best match of the afternoon, Brian Sheehan beat Ron Majerus. The two traded points back and forth throughout the match but Sheehan ultimately iced the match in the third period with his steady pressure. Our expectations are high here. Both of these guys have placed in the conference before and will be counting on "W's" here. Sheehan making sure that he finishes his senior year on a high note.
184 - Jimmy Hamel looked GREAT at 184 pounds. He physically looked great at his new weight and put a show on for the crowd. He dominated his first match against Kyle Smith and tech-falled Zach Ward in his second match. Jimmy wrestled like an All-American; he was dominated on his feet with several different take downs, scored quickly off bottom, and rode well on top. Ward beat Smith in the morning session to earn the number two spot at 184 pounds.
197 - Josh Peters beat Tyler Peter by major decision. They had their wrestle-off on Monday at practice. Josh scored a take down in the closing seconds of the first period and kept building from there on. Josh's defense looked good and he scrambled well. We are confident that Josh will compete at a very high level this year as he looks much better at the more natural weight (he moved up from 184 last year).
285 - Brett Correll stood-out as the most dominate wrestler at the wrestle-offs. He clearly stepped on the mat to dominate and did just that. He was up by about a dozen points on James Donner before pinning him. Brett was very aggressive and James was unable to get on the attack. Brett is ready to win at the highest level of competition. When the match is on the line, he will close it out for us.
