Wrestle-Off Notes: 141 & 149 lbs.

141 Pound Wrestle-Offs

Chris Conti – Chris is a redshirt sophomore this season.  He spot started for us last year up at 149 pounds after beginning the year at 133 pounds.  He went 12-14 last season at 133, 141, and 149 pounds, including a 7-5 record at 141 pounds.  He is looking to improve upon that as he stays at 141 pounds this year.  He placed 3rd at the NCCC Open last season.  Fun Fact:  Chris has been an actor in a movie.

John Crisafulli – John is in his senior year.  He is a very hard worker and gained valuable experience in 5 tournaments.  He is looking to get in the starting line-up this year.  John has wrestled at both 133 and 141 pounds for UB.  Both of John’s older brothers Rennie and Josh wrestled for UB.  Fun Fact: His dad gave him a hammer and had him working construction at age 5, and operating an excavator at age 9.

Andrew Schutt – Andrew returns from a solid freshman campaign from last season.  He started as a true freshman last year.  He placed 4th at the UB Open and the New York State Collegiate Tournament last season.  Following the regular season, he placed 4th at the University National Championships in freestyle and 6th in Greco-Roman.  He has the strength and ability to throw his opponent down and pin them.  Fun Fact:  Andrew is currently taking swimming for fitness and on his most recent progress report, his professor says that he is a fish in water.

149 Pound Wrestle-Offs

Rickey Bronson - Rickey is a true freshman that came to UB from one of the premier high schools in the state, Chenango Forks High School.  He placed a very solid 5th at the NHSCA Junior Nationals and qualified for the state tournament three times while beating several highly ranked wrestlers in high school.  Now he is looking to improve upon that success in college.  Rickey is a very hard worker.  Fun Fact:  Rickey claims that he once ate a BigMac with 10 burger patties on it in one sitting, which is pretty impressive and disgusting at the same time.

Desi Green - Desi is a star on the UB Team.  He is ranked to be a pre-season All-American and is looking to win a National Title.  Desi is on track to be the first 4 time National Qualifer at UB. He is as talented as anyone in the country.  He won a MAC Championship last year after finishing 2nd as a freshman.  Even though he is only just begining his junior season, his name is all over the UB record books.  He set the UB single-season takedown record as a freshman and was on track to break that record last year but missed a month of the season with a knee injury.  He has been a two-time NYS Collegiate Finalist and UB Open Champion.  Desi should be the first wrestler in UB history to break 100 wins as a junior.  Fun Fact:  Desi has not cut his hair since his senior year of high school and now has dreadlocks past his shouders.  He is required to wear a hairnet when he wrestles.

Jimmy Loomis - Jimmy is one of four wrestlers on the team that wrestled for Coach Bill Kays at Mexico High School (there must be something in the water in Mexico, NY).  He was a three time state qualifier and top 16 at NHSCA Senior Nationals.  He is very aggressive and constantly on the attack.  Fun Fact:  Jimmy claims that he beat his high school coach, Coach Kays, in a crab leg eatting contest at NHSCA Nationals.

Wally Maziarz – Wally is a freshman from just down the road in Tonawanda.  He won 149 matches in high school and has put a great deal of time into getting better this spring and summer.  He was injured the majority of his senior year but is finally 100% healthy and ready to go.  Fun Fact:  Wally has boxed for five years
