Video Tribute to Dan Bishop

This Video was created by Jacob Beichner.  Many people have seen this video on my Facebook.  It has also been shown to several large groups accompanied by a short speech from Danny during freshman orientation.  I have been told that the reaction to the video has been extremely positive and emotionally moving.  Thank you very much Jake for making this great video.  You have created something that the UB Wrestling family can be proud of...GREAT JOB!  I hope that you enjoy this video as much as I have!

Please note that by mistake our athletic trainer Allison Gammell was not included in the video.  Allison was the first responder to Dan's injury and played one of the most critical roles in saving Danny from permanent paralysis.  Many things had to occur in perfect sequence to save Danny.  This sequence began with Allison Gammell and her fast reaction to the injury.  Allison reacted immediately and stabilized Dan's head and neck within seconds of the impact.  Danny initially resisted and wanted to get back up and continue to wrestle.  His exact words were "Let me up, our team needs the (expletive) points...I need to win for the team".  Thankfully, Allison recognized that the injury was more serious and refused to let Dan move...if she would have, the results would have been even more catastrophic.  Sorry that your picture and name did not appear on the video Allison and thank you very much for all that you do for our wrestlers and what you did for Danny!

AUGUST 28, 2010: 3rd Annual Buffalo Wrestling Club Golf Outing

Website

Please e-mail Coach Beichner for a Golf Application at beichner@buffalo.edu

Alumni & Friends,

I hope that you will consider joining us for our 3rd annual event. This Golf tournament will be a great opportunity to connect with our fellow UB friends, alumnus and in general people who care about the program.

Starting this year, our tournament we will honor a select individual or individuals who played a significant role in the growth and success of our program. Our committee has overwhelmingly identified Jeff Parker and Dan Bishop as our 2010 honorees.

As you already know, Jeff passed away this year from cancer. He was extremely special to me and to our program. He was hard working, passionate and a lot of fun. He loved wrestling and he especially loved UB WRESTLING! Knowing Jeff as well as I did, I am sure that he would be one of the first to sign up and to support the program at the outing. Jeff’s father and some other friends and family from Massachusetts will be joining us at this very special event to celebrate his life and achievements.

Dan Bishop will also be honored at this year’s event to share his inspiring story with our friends. We have an opportunity to share in Danny’s miraculous recovery from one of the most devastating injuries that can occur in sports. You will have the opportunity to see and hear about Danny’s injury and recovery first hand! His story is inspiring and you will enjoy the time spent with him on this special occasion.

I hope to see you at the golf outing on the 28th.

Sincerely,

Jim Beichner

Rickey Deubel Joins Bulls Staff

UB welcomes Edinboro alum Ricky Deubel to the staff as an Assistant Coach for the 2010-2011 season. Deubel was a four-year starter at nationally-ranked Edinboro, compiling an overall record of 103-48 while three times earning an invite to the national championships. A native of Kenston, OH, Deubel was a three-time Ohio state finalist and two-time state champion. He would be named the state's Most Valuable Wrestler in 2004 and also claimed a senior national championship title.

At UB, Deubel will work with the Bulls' lightweight wrestlers, while also assisting in recruiting and UB's club program and summer camps. He graduated in December from Edinboro with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education.

“Ricky will be a fantastic addition to our coaching staff,” said Beichner. “He has a tremendous wrestling pedigree, is extremely energetic and passionate about the sport and will fill a huge void by being able to work directly with our talented young lightweights. His roots in Ohio can assist us in recruiting and he gives us another coach who has competed at the highest level of intercollegiate wrestling and wants to give back to the sport.”

Deubel has served as an assistant coach at the high school level at General McLane HS in McKean, PA and Mayfield (OH) High School and has volunteered for four years at the the Bruce Baumgartner World Class Wrestling Camp. He has also frequently served as a volunteer coach in his hometown of Kenston, as well as for the Ohio National Wrestling Team.

Dan Bishop - Determined to Beat the Odds

March 6, 2010- Dan Bishop took the mat to compete for a MAC Championship title his senior season as a Bull. It was during that match when Dan sustained what most thought was a life-changing injury. He beat the odds and the doctors' expecations by not only recovering at a rate exponentially faster than most, but walking at his graduation just 2 months later. Below is a collection of news articles, interviews, and tributes to Dan's wrestling career and his amazing recovery.
