The University at Buffalo Wrestling Program would like to wish all of its athletes, staff, their families and supporters a blessed holiday season and a wonderful new year!


The Bulls look forward to big achievements in the new year, as conference duals get under way and they work toward the National Championships in Philadelphia.  In addition, UB will be hosting its Second Annual Takedown Cancer fundraiser.  Please stay tuned for information regarding this upcoming event.

UB Press Release: Hamel & Smith Place at Reno

 RENO, NV - After a long day of wrestling, senior Jimmy Hamel and junior Kevin Smith helped to lead Buffalo to a tenth-place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions, held in Reno, Nevada all day Sunday. The tournament featured 30 teams and a wealth of talented wrestlers.

Hamel had an impressive day, losing only one match and winning six others. The Natick, MA native opened the day with a wins over Ty Vinson of Oregon State and Spence Patrick of Stanford by decision before his first loss. He battled through the wrestle-backs to set up a rematch in the third-place match with the wrestler he had lost to earlier in the day. Hamel took a 5-3 decision to end his day on a high note.

Smith also started his tournament off with a win before losing a tight 5-4 decision to Garrett Drucker of Oregon State. He then racked up four more wins before another loss put him into the fifth-place match with Drucker's teammate at OSU, James Roberts. Smith dispatched of Roberts 5-2 to claim the team's other placing for the day. 

Buffalo will have a week off to celebrate the holiday season and prepare to take on state rival Binghamton and the United States Merchant Marine Academy on January 2. The Bearcats are currently receiving votes in the national rankings but the Bulls are coming off a tight 19-16 win last year. It will be the team's first-ever meeting with the Merchant Marines. While the order is yet to be determined, the tri-meet will start at 4 pm.

Reno Tournament of Champions

The Bulls are competing in Reno, NV this weekend at the Tournament of Champions.  The following wrestlers were seeded in their brackets:

133 lbs -  Kevin Smith: #4

149 lbs - Desi Green: #2

165 lbs - John-Martin Cannon: #5

184 lbs - James Hamel: #4

Bulls Win Two of Three Dual Meets at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, PA - The Buffalo wrestling team rebounded strong after a loss to host Bloomsburg early in the day and won two straight meets over Drexel and East Stroudsburg to finish the day 2-1 at the Bloomsburg Duals Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Josh Peters led the team with wins in all three matches.

Two Bulls were undefeated on the day (Brett Correll and Josh Peters).  The only Bull to win all three matches on the day, Peters continues his hot streak that has been going strong for almost a month. The Vestal, NY native started the day with a 6-2 win against Bloomsburg. He then followed it up with decisions against Drexel (3-2) and East Stroudsburg (7-1). Starting with his third-place finish at the Body Bar Invite Nov. 20, Peters has now won 11 of his past 13 matches, including six straight.  Correll only wrestled in the first two matches but won both.

Junior Desi Green also went undefeated in his two matches, winning 9-4 against Bloomsburg and getting a major decision against Drexel (16-6). In the meet against ESU, Green rested while sophomore Andrew Schutt moved up from 141 pounds to take a 9-5 decision at 149 pounds. Schutt earned a major decision at 141 pounds in the match before, a 13-2 win over Drexel.

A pair of other Bulls wrestlers went 2-1 Sunday:  Mark Lewandowski (157) and Jimmy Hamel (184).
Buffalo now sits at 3-2 in duals meets and will take the next week to prepare for the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada next Sunday.

Weekend Review

This past weekend was a disappointing weekend to say the least.  We went 2-1 on the weekend but I thought we were more than capable of going 3-0.  We opened the weekend flat against Bloomsburg and rebounded to dominate Drexel and East Stroudsburg.

We lost close at 125 in a match that Walton needed to be more aggressive and get to his attacks against Bloomsburg.  Then, Walton won his next two matches by forfeit.  At 133 pounds, Smith was very sick all weekend and most of this week.  He pulled through and beat a tough opponent from Bloomsburg but took a loss against Drexel.  The wrestler he beat from Bloomsburg beat the Drexel wrestler and I believe Smith was the best 133 pound wrestler in the gym on Sunday.  Schutt lost a heart-breaker at 141 pounds against Bloomsburg, which was a bad loss for him.  Then, he dominate his Drexel opponent 13-2 (the Drexel wrestler beat the Bloomsburg wrestler that Schutt lost to earlier that day).  Against ESU, Schutt bumped up to 149 pounds and picked up a decision.  Conti wrestled at 141 pounds against ESU, but lost a 6-9 decision against a very tough opponent.  Green controlled the match at 149 pounds against Bloomsburg but I thought he was a little sluggish and should have been looking for bonus points.  In his match against Drexel, he looked much better with a major decision win.  At 157 pounds, Lewandowski controlled the Bloomsburg match early but had a terrible 3rd period and lost a very winnable match.  He beat his Drexel opponent easily and grabbed a forfeit against ESU.  At 165 pounds, Cannon did not open up enough to win and worked hard to address that problem this week.  He took losses to both Bloomsburg and Drexel.  In the ESU match, Cannon got back on track with a solid win.  Sheehan was winning the 174 pound match against Bloomsburg when he got pinned, which was a tough loss.  He lost a close match against the Drexel opponent (who Sheehan split with this year).  Sheehan scored a technical fall in his final match against ESU.  Hamel, much like Cannon, did not open up enough to win against Bloomsburg, but did enough to win against Drexel.  He looked very good against ESU, where he won by major decision.  The wrestler he majored from ESU beat two people this year that have beaten Hamel so that was nice to see him dominate the match.  Peters (197) and Correll (HWT) were the high-light performers of the weekend. Both were undefeated.  Peters beat a wrestler from Bloomsburg that had beat him during his redshirt year.  Then, he picked up a great win over his Drexel opponent that just placed at the Las Vegas Invite.  He followed that up with another solid win against ESU.  Correll beat his Bloomsburg opponent with solid wrestling and a high pace.  Then, he dominated a good opponent from Drexel.  Donner wrestled in the heavyweight match with ESU but lost a tight match by giving up an escape and a takedown in the 3rd period.

We are looking to bounce back Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions with a great team performance.
