UB Press Release: Hamel & Smith Place at Reno

 RENO, NV - After a long day of wrestling, senior Jimmy Hamel and junior Kevin Smith helped to lead Buffalo to a tenth-place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions, held in Reno, Nevada all day Sunday. The tournament featured 30 teams and a wealth of talented wrestlers.
Hamel had an impressive day, losing only one match and winning six others. The Natick, MA native opened the day with a wins over Ty Vinson of Oregon State and Spence Patrick of Stanford by decision before his first loss. He battled through the wrestle-backs to set up a rematch in the third-place match with the wrestler he had lost to earlier in the day. Hamel took a 5-3 decision to end his day on a high note.
Smith also started his tournament off with a win before losing a tight 5-4 decision to Garrett Drucker of Oregon State. He then racked up four more wins before another loss put him into the fifth-place match with Drucker's teammate at OSU, James Roberts. Smith dispatched of Roberts 5-2 to claim the team's other placing for the day. 
Buffalo will have a week off to celebrate the holiday season and prepare to take on state rival Binghamton and the United States Merchant Marine Academy on January 2. The Bearcats are currently receiving votes in the national rankings but the Bulls are coming off a tight 19-16 win last year. It will be the team's first-ever meeting with the Merchant Marines. While the order is yet to be determined, the tri-meet will start at 4 pm.
