Weekend Wrap-Up
Notes from the Boston Dual from Friday...

We started the dual at 184 pounds with Jimmy Hamel. Jimmy had more fans himself than the entire Boston team. He was making 184 pounds for the first time and did not disappoint the fans and got a solid win. We dropped the match at 197 pounds. Brett Correll got us going again at heavyweight with a pretty dominate match. Taylor Golba won probably the most exciting match of the night as he trailed all the way to the third period before ultimately winning in overtime. He did a great job in his match and showed a ton of heart. We lost a tight match at 133 pounds and needed to get more offensive to beat Santaite (he was top 12 at the NCAA National Tournament last season). Chris Conti really stepped up to dominate a solid wrestler in his match and Chris looked great on top. Desi Green put a show on at 149 pounds. He scored a technical fall over a very solid wrestler and looked great. He plans to set a new single-season (he already has the single season record at UB) and all-time takedown record at UB. Mark Lewandowski controlled the entire match with Tourville but just missed the major decision at 157. We lost the 165 and 174 pound matches to end the dual. I think both John-Martin Cannon and Brian Sheehan have the ability to wrestle much better and they did just that at the UB Open
Notes from Sunday's UB Open...
The team looked really good at the UB Open. We dominated the tournament with more finalists and more champions than any other school (including the top 10 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes). At 125 pounds, Taylor Golba pretty much dominated the tournament. The only offensive points that were scored on him in the entire tournament was a takedown late in the finals match. Sean Walton and Max Soria placed 5th and 6th respectively. At 133 pounds, Kevin Smith made the finals and Justin Farmer placed 6th. Kevin lost a hard fought 6-0 decision to Ian Paddock of Ohio State in the finals but I felt like the match was much closer than the score indicated. At 141 pounds, Andrew Schutt wrestled very well and won the championship. He looked good in all positions and was very aggressive. At 149 pounds, Desi Green just kept doing what he does best, winning and scoring a lot of points. Desi dominated until the finals where he won a close match over the NAIA National Champion who did his best to keep the score close. Mark Lewandowski beat some very good wrestlers on his way to the tournament finals. In the finals, he lost a hard-fought 4-1 decision to #5 nationally ranked Colt Sponsellor. Mark wrestled very well but gave up a late takedown when the referee on the next mat blew his whistle while Mark was in on a single leg. John-Martin Cannon cruised to the championship with scores of 20-6, 22-10, 13-5, and 8-5. Nearly every point scored on Cannon came from him cutting his opponent to give them an escape point in oder to get another takedown. Pat Brady also placed and wrestled well in the tournament at 165 pounds. At 174 pounds, both Brian Sheehan and Ron Majerus placed. Sheehan finished higher (4th) after edging Majerus 3-2 in the consolation semifinals. Sheehan had one of the most exciting matches of the entire tournament in the semifinals in a heart breaking loss. The Sheehan-Majerus match might have been the best match I saw from a defensive stand point, as both got in on several shots and both showed great defense ability. At 184 pounds, Jimmy Hamel finished 2nd and is a five-time UB Open place winner (5th, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, and 2nd). Jimmy did not wrestle his best in the finals and is looking to come back with a vengeance on Friday. At Heavyweight, Brett Correll finished 2nd only losing to NAIA National Runner-Up Scales. Brett got taken down to this back midway through the match and that was the difference in the match. James Donner also placed in the first college tournament that he has competed in, which is a great feat for a true freshman in the heavyweight category.
Overall, I felt like we did not wrestle our best on Friday against Boston but still got a solid win. As a team, we looked very impressive at the UB Open on Sunday. It was a great team effort in both events.
Its a big week for us with Oklahoma at home on Friday and the Oklahoma Gold Classic on Saturday. There will be more information to come on both of these events in the next few days.

Bulls Crown Four Champs at UB Open
BUFFALO, NY – Out of the ten weight divisions offered at the UB Open Sunday morning, the Buffalo squad placed wrestlers in the finals in eight of them as the Bulls capped off a strong opening week of the season. The team split the eight championship matches, with four titles and four second-place results, battling over 200 wrestlers from some of the top schools in Divisions I, II and III.
Taylor Golba, fresh off a great comeback victory at Boston, cruised through his bracket with four straight wins to take the 125-pound championship. The Buffalo, NY native defeated Kory Mines of Edinboro, 8-3. At 133 pounds, Kevin Smith found his way to the finals before facing another tough opponent - Ian Paddock of Ohio State - who came in ranked 16th in the nation at 133. Smith fell 6-0 to take second place.
Sophomore Andrew Schutt made his season debut at 141 count for Buffalo, sweeping his four matches to clinch the second team title. Schutt controlled tempo throughout his match with Kasey Davis of Edinboro and took the match with a score of 6-1.
Teammate Desi Green had more of a challenge in his championship match, after slicing through the 149 pound bracket with relative ease. Facing Jeffrey Pelton of Notre Dame College, who was a NAIA national champion last season, Green was frustrated through all three periods, earning the 2-1 win after his opponent was penalized for stalling late in the final period.
Mark Lewandowski had a terrific day at 157 pounds, winning three straight physical matches before facing Ohio State's Colt Sponseller in the final. Sponseller came into the match ranked fifth in the nation and he earned critical points late to earn a 4-1 win.
In the 165 pound bracket, junior John-Martin Cannon came out with a purpose and was one of the highest-scoring members of the team, posting totals of 20, 22, 13 and eight points in his four total wins to take the championship.
Senior Jimmy Hamel had a shorter trip to the finals in the 184 pound bracket, winning two matches before losing 6-3 in the championship. Brett Correll had a similar result, losing to the number one seed in the heavyweight finals after recording two straight wins.
The Bulls have will now rest up and prepare for one of the biggest dual meets in program history as it welcomes in Oklahoma this coming Friday. It will be the first time in program history the Sooners will be in Alumni Arena for a dual meet, with match time set for 3:00 pm.

UB Defeats Boston U to Kick Off 2010 Season
BOSTON, MA - With the Buffalo Bulls wrestling squad chomping at the bit to open a highly anticipated season, the team hit the road and jumped out to an impressive lead over Boston University Friday night. The team won three of the first four matches and held on for a 20-15 win to start the season on a high note.
Senior Jimmy Hamel picked up right where he left off, winning 3-1 for his 89th career win, this time at his new weight class of 184. This was also his first dual meet in his home state, as the Natick, MA native led off the match with an important win for the team.
After Boston squared the match back up at 3-3, sophomore heavyweight Brett Correll earned a 6-1 decision in his first match after missing most of last season due to injury. In the very next matchup, Taylor Golba made a terrific comeback to give the Bulls three crucial points. Down 5-0 going into the third period, the Buffalo, NY native went on a tear and had three takedowns and rode his opponent out to force an overtime period. Just fifteen seconds into extra time, Golba had yet another takedown to complete the comeback win at 125 pounds.
One of the marquee matchups of the night was at 133 pounds, where redshirt junior Kevin Smith took on 20th ranked Fred Santiate in a meeting of nationally ranked grapplers. Smith fell just shy of the win, losing 3-2 in a dramatic finish to the match. Again the Bulls rallied though, as Chris Conti earned a 7-0 shutout at 141 pounds.
The team got a big point boost in the 149 pound match, as defending Mid American Conference champion Desi Green earned a tech fall in a 22-6 win. The junior - who owns the program's single-season record for takedowns - proved why, picking up five in the first period alone before his tech fall helped the Bulls earn five points for a 17-6 lead in the overall meet.
Mark Lewandowski padded the lead in the team's final win of the night, a 7-1 win at 157 pounds. His opponent was the Minnesota state champion as a high school senior, but the Depew, NY native earned three near-fall points in the second period to take control of the match.
The win extended the Buffalo lead in the all-time series between the two schools, with the last meeting coming in 1998. With the season now officially underway and the team returning home 1-0, the Bulls return home to host the annual UB Open Sunday morning in an all-day event. The non-team-scoring event will feature wrestlers and teams that are among the NWCA/NCAA top 25 in the nation.
