We have our high school competition camp and kids technique camp next week. The camp runs from July 5th through the 9th. We have the UB wrestling coaches, UB wrestling team members, and many other coaches working our camp next week, including NCAA Champion Mitch Clark. We are excited to get the team together for a great week of camp.

Bulls Compete in South Korea
I was recently the head wrestling coach for the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches’ Association All-American Tour to South Korea. I took several collegiate student athletes to South Korea for nine days of training and competition. The University at Buffalo was represented by four student athletes (Brian Hittle, Andrew Stella, Jimmy Hamel, and Jason Weber). The team trained at both the Korean National Sport University and the Korean National Training Center. The Korean National Sport University (KNSU) has the best university wrestling team in the country. Our team trained for three days at the KNSU. At the KNSU, we participated in their practice sessions. There were also wrestlers from a handful of other university teams training with us at the KNSU. The coaching staff, comprised of former Korean National Champions, World and Olympic medalists, worked with our guys extensively. Then, our team wrestled some matches against KNSU team members and a few other Korean national place finishers. Some of the highlights included Brian Hittle and Jimmy Hamel’s outstanding performances. Brian Hittle had a nice win highlighted by a five-point throw over Korean University National place-winner Park Nam Chun. Jimmy Hamel won matches against Korean University National Bronze Medalist, Bak Seok Won, and another Korean national place-winner.
Following our stint at the Korean National Sport University, we trained and wrestled at the Korean National Training Center for the remained of the trip. The National Training Center is the equivalent of the Olympic Training Center here in the United States. At the National Training Center, we spent a lot of time with Korean National Team Coaches, including Korean National Head Coach and three time Olympic finalist, Park Jang-Soon. Our experience at the National Training Center was outstanding. The team wrestled the top two wrestlers in the South Korea in each weight class. Jimmy Hamel was definitely the highlight of the competition with a huge win against a Korean Senior National Champion, Byung-Kwan Cho. In fact, Cho was the 2008 Asian Games Champion (45 counties and regions are represented in the Asian Games) and a 2008 South Korean Olympian (he had a 1-2 record at the 2008 Olympics).
It was a great experience for all four of these guys to compete against the best in South Korea. They learned a lot and trained very hard. This experience will carry over into next season and beyond.

We just had a visitor in town looking at our assistant light weight coaching position. We had a great visit with Jimmy Rollins who is currently the Interim Head Coach at Iowa Lakes Junior College. Here is a brief bio of Jimmy Rollins' career.
Jimmy Rollins just finished his first season as assistant wrestling coach with the newly formed Iowa Lakes Wrestling Program. He is looking to help take the program to the top. Rollins help lead the Lakers program to a sixth place finish at the NJCAA National Championships in 2008-09. Rollins comes to Iowa Lakes after coaching two seasons at Dana College where he helped produce 12 Athletic All-Americans as well as 5 Academic All-Americans. In the 2006-2007 season the team was GPAC Champions as well as the North Region Champions. They ended the season with a 4th place performance at the National Tournament but finished the season with the #1 GPA in the Nation. In the 2007-2008 season they repeated as GPAC Champions and finished the season in 5th place at the National Tournament.
Before beginning his coaching career he began his collegiate wrestling career at Gloucester County College in New Jersey. Freshman year he was the 1st ever undefeated National Champion in the school history winning the NJCAA crown at 125lbs.While at GCC his team also won the Div 3 Junior College National Championship in 2002. In his sophomore season Rollins again won the Mid-Atlantic region title but was injured in his semi final match forcing him to pull out of the tournament and finished in 6th place garnering another All-American season.Rollins then transferred to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska .During his junior season he won GPAC and Central Region titles and finished 3rd in the NAIA national tournament. In his senior season he defended his Central region crown and capped off his career on top of the podium winning the 133lb title at the NAIA national tournament. While Dana College also won the NAIA team title with a record breaking performance of 193 points. Rollins finished his collegiate career with a 114-9 record.Rollins, formerly of West Deptford, NJ, wrestled for West Deptford High where he was a 2-time New Jersey state place winner placing 6th and 3rd. He was also a 2-time District 29 champ and a Region 8 champ. During his junior season West Deptford brought home the 2000 NJSIAA state championship in Group 3.
