Golf Outing & Jeff Parker Update
We had our second annual Buffalo Wrestling Club Golf Outing this past weekend and it was another success. Thank you to Mickey Moran and Joe Muscarella for running the event this year!
Jeff Catrabone's team won the event for the second time. I think that Jeff's wife Amy (8 months pregnant) is their ringer. Our last place team was none other than - Frank Beasley's team (UB's Assitant Wrestling Coach). I don't really know what their score was...I just know that it was real bad!!!
Jeff Parker, Mike Ragusa and Scott Rendos were also present at this years event. As you may already know, Jeff had surgery about a month ago to remove a melanoma (skin cancer) on his neck. They removed the melanoma and took out one of his neck muscles and many lymph nodes in the process of removing the melanoma. Jeff is going into the last stage of his treatment and it will be a while before he is finished. Jeff, we are all thinking about you and hoping for great results...YOU WILL WIN THIS BATTLE!!!
Here is a short Jeff Parker Interview.

Buffalo Wrestling Announces 2009-2010 Newcomers
12 grapplers slated to join program
var addthis_pub="ubathletics";
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo head wrestling coach Jim Beichner has announced the addition of 12 student-athletes from New York, Michigan, Illinois and Massachusetts who will join the program for the upcoming 2009-10 season. The newcomers combine for over 2,100 high school wins and 24 top-three finishes in their respective state tournaments including three high school All-Americans from three different states.
Coach Jim BeichnerAt 125, the Bulls signed Sean Walton (Palmyra Macedon/Palmyra, NY) and Matt Watson (Hastings/Hastings, MI) . A three-time state qualifier, Walton finished in third place in 2007 and 2008 at the New York State Championships while finishing second in his senior year. He also was a NHSCA High School All-American as a senior. Watson is a four-time state qualifier, who continually improved in his placements at each of the Michigan State Championships including a second-place finish in 2009.
Looking to compete at either 125 or 133 is four-time state qualifier and three-time top-three finisher Justin Farmer (Lincoln-Way Central/New Lenox, IL) . He finished 16th overall at 130 in the final rankings of the 2008-2009 nation’s best high school senior wrestlers by Wrestling USA Magazine and was a NHSCA High School All-American as a senior.
Joining the Bulls from northern New York is 133-pounder Shawn Brown (Canton/De Kalb Junction, NY) , a six-time state qualifier and second-place finisher at the 2008 New York State Championship.
Earning Outstanding Wrestler with a perfect 14-0 tournament finish at the 2009 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa is 141-pounder Andrew Schutt (Yale/Greenwood Township, MI) . A two-time Disney Duals National All-American and five-time AAU Junior Olympics All-American, Schutt recorded four top-three finishes at the Michigan State Championships. After placing at the 2009 NHSCA Senior National Championships, he earned honorable mention in the Wrestling USA Magazine high school national rankings.
The Bulls will have two New York State natives looking to compete at either 141 or 149. First is Josh Micek (Maple Grove/Bemus Point, NY) , a three-time state qualifier with a personal best second-place state championship finish in 2008. Second is 145-pound 2009 New York State champion and two-time state finalist Brian Sewalt (Waverly/Waverly, NY) . In the final national rankings by Wrestling USA Magazine, Sewalt ranked 16th at 145. Also joining the Bulls at 141 is three-time state qualifier Nate Skiba (Kenmore West/Kenmore, NY) .
Looking to compete at 157 is the 17th nationally-ranked wrestler at 152 by Wrestling USA Magazine, Kenny Betts (Fredonia/Cassadaga, NY) . In five appearances at the state championships, he captured two state championships in 2007 and 2009 and two runner-up finishes. He joins the Bulls as the winningest New York State wrestler (269) and runner-up in all-time pins (186). Nationally, he finished his high school career at Fredonia fifth for all-time most career wins and fourth for all-time most career pins.
With two years of eligibility remaining, transfer Brian Sheehan (University of Massachusetts-Lowell/Lowell, MA) will wrestle at either 165 or 174. At 163, he reached the mini tournament of the 2009 US Freestyle Nationals, which serves as the US Senior World Team Trials quailifer, facing a field of nationally top-ten ranked wrestlers including Cyler Sanderson of Iowa State, Bryce Saddoris of Navy, Moza Fay of Northern Iowa and Matt Moley of Bloomsburg. In high school, he was a two-time New England champion and four-time Massachusetts State champion. As a senior, he was named to the 2006 Wrestling USA Magazine's All-America team.
At 174, New York State qualifier Pat Brady (Carthage/Carthage, NY) joins the Bulls. Rounding out the 2009 class is Jeff Miller (Westlake/Thornwood, NY) , a state qualifier who will look to compete at 184.
Approximately three-quarters of the 2009 class hail from New York State, which will serve as their identity. According to assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Beasley, the program desired to sign the best talent in New York State. “We want to keep the best New York wrestlers in state, while also adding some of the top out-of-state wrestlers in the country. This year is no different as we are bringing in eight of New York’s best seniors while adding wrestlers from Michigan, Illinois and Massachusetts,” said Beasley.
“This class is coach Beasley’s first full class as the recruiting coordinator at the University at Buffalo”, said Beichner. “I am very pleased to welcome a very talented and hard-working class. Our goal at the beginning of the recruiting cycle was to add depth and talent to our very young team. We have added 12 student-athletes across 7 of the 10 weight classes.”
Beasley added, “The incoming freshman are hungry and eager to compete. I would expect a couple of these young men to be ready to step right into the line-up and compete on a national level. The recruiting class is not only talented on the mat but also in the classroom. One thing that really sticks out about this class is they all have high moral character. With this strong recruiting class and a good young team returning, I expect our team to make big improvements this season”.

2009 UB Golf Outing is September 11th
We are holding the 2009 UB Golf Outing on September 11th. We will start at 9:00 AM and tee times will be every 10 minutes. We want to encourage all of our Alumni and friends of the program to attend the event. We will also have a steak cookout on September 11th after 18 holes of golf. Last year was a great event and this year is going to be bigger and better!
On September 12th, UB Football has its home opener against the University of Pittsburg (ranked #1 in the Big East). It looks like the football team is going to have a great year and they are trying to repeat as MAC Champions. Our football team lost a heart breaker to Pitt last year and we are going to get revenge this year.
For more information on our golf outing and the football game against Pitt, feel free to contact us. Coach Beichner’s cell phone number is 716-289-2855 and his e-mail address is beichner@buffalo.edu. Mickey Moran Returns to UB as a Coach
We are excited to introduce our new club coach, Mickey Moran. We welcome Mickey back to the UB Wrestling team. Mickey is a 2009 graduate of UB and the team captain the last two years. He is a very talented wrestler and great leader. He is going to work with our team and the Super Six Wrestling Club. He will be a big part of our future success. Mickey is still training freestyle and is making a run at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Mickey was a 2009 NCAA National Qualifier for us this year. He won two New York State Collegiate Championships and the UB Open at 184 pounds. In addition to those tournaments, he was a Mat Town Tournament Champion. He finished his career at UB with 88 victories (top 10 all-time at UB) and is in the top 10 for career takedowns at UB.
He is an outstanding freestyle wrestler. Mickey wrestles in the 84kg weight class. His best performance came at the University World Team Trials in 2008, where he placed 3rd. He is a two-time University Freestyle All-American, finishing 4th in 2008 and7th in 2007.

Bulls Compete in South Korea
I was recently the head wrestling coach for the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches’ Association All-American Tour to South Korea. I took several collegiate student athletes to South Korea for nine days of training and competition. The University at Buffalo was represented by four student athletes (Brian Hittle, Andrew Stella, Jimmy Hamel, and Jason Weber). The team trained at both the Korean National Sport University and the Korean National Training Center. The Korean National Sport University (KNSU) has the best university wrestling team in the country. Our team trained for three days at the KNSU. At the KNSU, we participated in their practice sessions. There were also wrestlers from a handful of other university teams training with us at the KNSU. The coaching staff, comprised of former Korean National Champions, World and Olympic medalists, worked with our guys extensively. Then, our team wrestled some matches against KNSU team members and a few other Korean national place finishers. Some of the highlights included Brian Hittle and Jimmy Hamel’s outstanding performances. Brian Hittle had a nice win highlighted by a five-point throw over Korean University National place-winner Park Nam Chun. Jimmy Hamel won matches against Korean University National Bronze Medalist, Bak Seok Won, and another Korean national place-winner.
Following our stint at the Korean National Sport University, we trained and wrestled at the Korean National Training Center for the remained of the trip. The National Training Center is the equivalent of the Olympic Training Center here in the United States. At the National Training Center, we spent a lot of time with Korean National Team Coaches, including Korean National Head Coach and three time Olympic finalist, Park Jang-Soon. Our experience at the National Training Center was outstanding. The team wrestled the top two wrestlers in the South Korea in each weight class. Jimmy Hamel was definitely the highlight of the competition with a huge win against a Korean Senior National Champion, Byung-Kwan Cho. In fact, Cho was the 2008 Asian Games Champion (45 counties and regions are represented in the Asian Games) and a 2008 South Korean Olympian (he had a 1-2 record at the 2008 Olympics).
It was a great experience for all four of these guys to compete against the best in South Korea. They learned a lot and trained very hard. This experience will carry over into next season and beyond.
Thanks for following us,
Coach Beasley

We just had a visitor in town looking at our assistant light weight coaching position. We had a great visit with Jimmy Rollins who is currently the Interim Head Coach at Iowa Lakes Junior College. Here is a brief bio of Jimmy Rollins' career.
Jimmy Rollins just finished his first season as assistant wrestling coach with the newly formed Iowa Lakes Wrestling Program. He is looking to help take the program to the top. Rollins help lead the Lakers program to a sixth place finish at the NJCAA National Championships in 2008-09. Rollins comes to Iowa Lakes after coaching two seasons at Dana College where he helped produce 12 Athletic All-Americans as well as 5 Academic All-Americans. In the 2006-2007 season the team was GPAC Champions as well as the North Region Champions. They ended the season with a 4th place performance at the National Tournament but finished the season with the #1 GPA in the Nation. In the 2007-2008 season they repeated as GPAC Champions and finished the season in 5th place at the National Tournament.
Before beginning his coaching career he began his collegiate wrestling career at Gloucester County College in New Jersey. Freshman year he was the 1st ever undefeated National Champion in the school history winning the NJCAA crown at 125lbs.While at GCC his team also won the Div 3 Junior College National Championship in 2002. In his sophomore season Rollins again won the Mid-Atlantic region title but was injured in his semi final match forcing him to pull out of the tournament and finished in 6th place garnering another All-American season.Rollins then transferred to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska .During his junior season he won GPAC and Central Region titles and finished 3rd in the NAIA national tournament. In his senior season he defended his Central region crown and capped off his career on top of the podium winning the 133lb title at the NAIA national tournament. While Dana College also won the NAIA team title with a record breaking performance of 193 points. Rollins finished his collegiate career with a 114-9 record.Rollins, formerly of West Deptford, NJ, wrestled for West Deptford High where he was a 2-time New Jersey state place winner placing 6th and 3rd. He was also a 2-time District 29 champ and a Region 8 champ. During his junior season West Deptford brought home the 2000 NJSIAA state championship in Group 3.

The University at Buffalo Wrestling program is developing our very first Blog and we are very excited to start sharing our story with more people.
UB is a very large and prestigious research institution located approximately 20 minutes from downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls. We have two campuses approximately 4.5 miles apart from each other. The south campus is where our professional schools are located (medical, dental, physical therapy etc.) and the north campus is primarily where our undergrad students attend classes. The north campus is developed on approximately 1,200 acres of land. We have three lakes, a bike path and many beautiful new apartment complexes spread out around the campus. We also have a very diverse group of students and professors, giving our campus a very multinational feeling. More about the UB campus in the future, and I will probably add some nice pictures and maybe a video or two as I learn how to fully use the blog.
The wrestling program has been around for a little over 75 years. Our program has been associated with the NCAA at the Division III, II and I level over the past 75 years. Along with 21 other sports, we compete at the Division I level with the best of the best. The football program was elevated to the Division I-A status approximately 9 years ago. They have recently achieved unparalleled success thanks in part to our fantastic coach - Turner Gill. Coach Gill lead our program to our first ever Mid American Conference Championship in 2008 -GO BULLS!! I'm sure there is more to great things to come from our football program!
Last year we caped off a very challenging season by qualifying four wrestlers to the Division I National Championships in st. Louis. Jimmy Hamel - 197 lbs., Mickey Moran - 184 lbs., Nate Rock - 174 lbs., and Desmond Green - 149 lbs. We are all extremely proud of these four young me!. Two of the national qualifiers; Nate and Mickey were seniors last year and will be moving on. The other two will be back for more! Jimmy Hamel will be with the bulls for another two years while Desi Green has three years of eligibility left. We are looking forward to future success with these young and talented men!!
Desi and Jimmy were also All-Americans (freestyle) at the University National Championships this past season- both placing 7th. We also had an All-American in Greco at the University National Championships - Dylan Dabolt.
We are excited to share interesting news and facts about our program...please tune in to learn more.
