Kurt Angle and UB Graduate Don Curtis selected as inductees into George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame

WATERLOO, Iowa - Kurt Angle and UB Graduate Don Curtis have been selected as the 2012 inductees into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.

The selection committee includes all living Hall of Fame members, all living Frank Gotch Award winners, and a select group of wrestling historians. The selection committee votes for one living and one posthumous inductee.

Induction into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame includes substantial impact on professional wrestling, general respect within the profession, and a strong amateur wrestling background.

“I can’t think of someone more qualified than Kurt Angle to enter the Hall of Fame,” said Hall of Famer Gerry Brisco. “He won gold at every level. Don Curtis was a great man and an outstanding wrestler. He spent his entire life bettering wrestling. Both are great additions.”

Angle was a two-time NCAA champion for Clarion University and a 1996 Olympic champion. He joins Dan Hodge and Dick Hutton as distinguished members at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla., and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo. Angle, one of the biggest superstars in professional wrestling history, currently wrestles for TNA.

Curtis was a member of the University of Buffalo wrestling team. He was team captain in 1949 and 1950. Curtis was NWA tag team champion with Mark Lewin during the 1950s and 1960s. He died on March 6, 2008.

Four special awards are given during induction weekend as well. Special award winners will be announced on November 14, 2011.

Hall of Fame weekend is July 13-14, 2012, in Waterloo, Iowa.

Renovation Update and Message to Alumni and Friends

Alumni and Friends of UB Wrestling;

I would like to personally thank the over 60 alumni and friends that came together in the last six months to help us raise the much needed financial support for the renovation of the UB Wrestling facility project. The renovation of the facility is in its final stages of completion and will be ready for a grand unveiling on November 5th, 2011.

I am writing to you today to let you know that we have not yet achieved our full and final fundraising goal and we are now down to just one week remaining.
I would ask that you please make a final consideration to helping us finish our fundraising for the facility upgrade. I would like to personally thank those who are receiving this email and have already made a pledge in support of UB Wrestling.

I know that you will be proud of what you see and that your name or your family’s name will be forever attached to a significant moment in UB Wrestling history. All donations over $1,000 will be recognized on a plaque that will be displayed on the walls of the new UB Wrestling facility.

Pittsburgh Sports Performance Center Opens With Young Guns Invitational

A Young Guns Invitational competition marked the opening of the new Pittsburgh Sports Performance Center on Sept. 3.

This center, previously the site of a for-profit sports training facility, was purchased and renovated by USAW Grassroots Board member Regis Becker, president of the Pittsburgh Barbell Club, and donated to the Pittsburgh Sports Performance & Development Corporation – a non-profit foundation created by Becker for the advancement of Olympic weightlifting and the application of Olympic lifting methods and means to other sports. The generosity of the Becker family in making this substantial investment is a noteworthy development for USA Weightlifting.

Located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville, Pa., the Center has been configured specifically for Olympic weightlifting in a 4,000 square foot space, including one competition and six training platforms, together with supporting strength training and related fitness equipment. The space is ideal both for day-to-day training and competitions. The facility has also been designed to support athletes from other sports seeking high level strength and conditioning, with ample space for expansion as needs require. Specialized kettle bell training is offered on-site, as well as boxing and martial arts training.

The opening of the center represents a serious and significant commitment on Becker’s part to expand and energize Olympic weightlifting in Pittsburgh and the surrounding region – an area with a rich weightlifting history. Located in the western most part to Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh is situated three hours west of York which has been the center of weightlifting in the United States. Former weightlifting greats Russ Knipp, Cal Shake and Kurt Setterberg as well as USAW Hall of Fame Coach Marty Cypher have hailed from the Pittsburgh area.

The York Barbell Company, less active for the most part in recent years in terms of involvement in Olympic weightlifting, has again offered its facilities for competitions. With this development and the opening of the Pittsburgh Sports Performance Center, significant weightlifting activity can be anticipated to return Pennsylvania and revive the connection that formerly linked weightlifting in the Northeast with the Midwest.

The weekend’s events at the center included an A Session invitational component on Saturday, followed by a pizza supper at the center provided by the Becker family for lifters and visitors. A novice competition was conducted on Sunday morning, followed by an open B Session.

The quality of the lifting on Saturday was high level, reflecting the caliber of the lifters in attendance, including National Champion Mike Graber, National Junior Champion and Junior World Team member Mike Nackoul, National silver medalist Mike Cerbus and national level competitors Kelly Charniga, Drew Dillon, Kevin Cornell, Mike Kreatsoulas and Tony Blanksteen. All were fit and in good lifting condition.

International level coaches in attendance with these lifters included Lou DeMarco, Mark Cannella and Bud Charniga as well as former national level lifter and Pittsburgh resident Frank Remschel. Since former Olympian and Team New Jersey coach Bob Giordano was unable to attend, having just returned from the World University competition in China, USAW High Performance Director Peter Roselli handled coaching duties for Mike Graber. Notable visitors in the audience were former elite international U.S. weightlifters Roy and Kurt Setterberg.

On Sunday, Roselli refereed the novice session comprised of high school level athletes, primarily wrestlers using weightlifting for strength and conditioning, and identified four of the most promising lifters from among the group. Roselli, Becker and Graber, a former intercollegiate wrestler, talked with the group and their forward thinking coach, Paul Recrosio. Graber was able to provide some insight and a unique perspective from a wrestler’s point of view regarding the benefits of Olympic weightlifting and the opportunities in weightlifting for wrestlers once their scholastic or intercollegiate careers end.

Dear Alumni & Friends of UB Wrestling:

Hello from Buffalo, NY! It is my hope that this letter finds all of you in good health and ready for another exciting year of UB Wrestling. I wanted to take a minute or two to give you an inside perspective of what is going on with our UB Wrestling program.

Before we move forward, let me provide you with last year’s highlights. The 2010-11 Wrestling Bulls had a banner year. We crowned four Mid-American Champions and one of them was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. When all was said and done UB qualified 6 out of 10 wrestlers to participate in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Our accolades did not stop there; because of the strong finish Coach Jim Beichner was named the 201-11 Mid-American Coach of the year. One would ask how could our wrestling program build upon that?

First, our Athletic Administration decided to make a major investment into our wrestling program and our wrestling facility. They invested $400,000 into our facilities to ensure that we can compete both on and off the mat. This allows us to recruit and compete for the ‘blue chip’ wrestlers. It provides the current wrestler with a state of the art wrestling facility complete with a remote scoreboard, mini fitness center and top notch video system. When you see it will light the competitive fire in you and stir up old memories of you and your teammates.

Second, Coach Beichner took the coaching staff to another level after the sudden departure of coach Frank Beasley. Coach used all of his contacts and put the word out that UB needed to fill the assistant coach’s position. Within minutes of this announcement, the flood gate open and the amount of high quality candidates poured in. When the dust settled and the interviews were completed, our wrestling program was able to attract and hire an unbelievable coach. Don’t believe it, let me spell it out for you. Our new assistant wrestling coaches’ name is Matthew Lackey. Coach Lackey brings a great deal of experience to the program in both the collegiate and international styles of wrestling. As a collegiate wrestler, Matt was a 2003 Division I National Champion, 3X all-American, Academic all-American and Big Ten Male Athlete-of-the-Year at the University of Illinois. He is a two-time Olympic Trial qualifier and took fourth at the 2008 U.S. Senior Nationals. An Illinois native, Lackey won two high school state championships. He brings to our program experience, intensity, intelligence and is a person with great character. Enough said on that topic, the proof is right in front of you. He won the big one and he wants to work and train our athletes to achieve the same and he expects nothing short of excellence in every aspect of the wrestlers’ lives.
Finally, did you know that the Univeristy at Buffalo purchased a suite at the NCAA’s and hosted an UB Wrestling Alumni & Friends during all three days of competition at the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. It was a first class event and our administration and alumni association like it so much that they are going to partner with us to make this a yearly event at the NCAA’s. Please consider making the trip!

Do I have your attention yet? If not, let me explain how you can help yourself and our wrestling program continue to grow to becoming a top ten wrestling program! We need each and every alumnus, former wrestler and friends to get on board; only together we can make this dream a reality. With the next two weeks the athletic development office will be sending you a mailer outlining the room renovation concept. I would like to ask that each of you take some time and read this important material and also reflect on your past experience wrestling here for the BULLS. IF you had a great experience here and enjoy wrestling and meeting our friends and teammates, I would ask you to strongly consider giving back to the program that made all of us winners and gave us the ability to provide for our families. I like many of you have pledged what I could to ensure that our wrestling program has the resources it needs to remain competitive. It is a personal choice and I am aware of the current financial twist and turns, however your wrestling coach and your teammates believed in you and it is now you turn to step up to be heard and remembered if you are so inclined. The letter will outline the current funding levels broken down over a four year period.

This will be another big year for our wrestling program, we will be having a wrestling room grand opening and dedication, we will be wrestling the University of Michigan in Alumni Arena in November, The University will be inducting two more former wrestling greats into the Athletic Hall of Fame, we will be wrestling in the Virginia Duals, conducting our third annual Takedown Cancer Event. All of this with the sole purpose of winning the Mid-American Championships and qualifying as many wrestler as we can to represent you and our university at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

I like all of you who wrestled for UB want the very best for this program. The sport of wrestling gave me all of the tools I need to successful and now it is my turn to do the right thing and help this program. Let’s support the Blue and White and continue to prove that wrestlers are the best, both on and off the mat.

Hello Alumni and Friends we are once again about to embark on another BULLS wrestling season. We are very excited about all the young talent in this year’s recruiting class along with all the upperclassmen we have returning. In addition we have recently hired Head Assistant Coach Matt Lackey, and are still in the process of renovating our wrestling facility which is almost complete.

We would like to invite you to a Tailgate Wrestling Party taking place on the 10th of September prior to our football home opener vs. Stoney Brook University at 6pm. The tailgate will begin at 3pm in the recently added Stampede Square on the corner of Coventry Road and Augspurger Road. The cost of the social will be $10.00 per person and $5.00 for children under 12.

The $10.00 ticket will pay for the food and tent that we are reserving for the day. We will also be raffling off a gift at the door when you purchase your ticket. Feel free to bring your own adult beverage to the tailgate as soda and water will be included. Game tickets will be available for $10.00 at the tailgate.

This will be a great opportunity for you to meet 3x All American, NCAA Champ Matt Lackey our new head Assistant coach along with current members of this year’s UB wrestling team.

Coach Lackey brings a great deal of experience to the program in both the collegiate and international styles of wrestling. As a collegiate wrestler, Matt was a 2003 Division I National Champion, 3X all-American, Academic all-American and Big Ten Male Athlete-of-the-Year at the University of Illinois. Assistant Coaching Update

We have our second candidate coming to visit Buffalo this weekend to look at the Head Assistant Coaching position. I won't tell you his name just yet... but I will give you a peek at some of his credentials.

He was a three time Division I all-American - a Division I National Champion - an academic all-American and Big Ten male athlete of the year. Our candidate is also a solid person with great values and a tremendous work ethic.

We have a very deep candidate pool to work with and there is a tremendous amount of interest in our program. Great things are happening here in Buffalo!

As many of you already konw, Coach Beasley is taking a new coaching job and will not longer serve as our assistant wrestling coach effective immediatley. I would like to personally thank Coach Frank Beasley for the great work that he did while serving as our assistant coach here at UB. I am sad to see Frank leave the program but wish both him and his wife Lyndsey the best of luck in their new endeavors. I would also like to thank Lyndsey for the work that she was doing on our blog and twitter accounts. Lyndsey was a valuable resource while here in Buffalo and she will also be missed!

We are currently interviewing replacements for Frank and I am happy to say that we have great candidates interested in the position. Just today, a well qualified candidate spent the day on campus and loved what he saw. With all of the new renovations and recent success, It is easy to show the candidates how committed UB is to the wrestsling program.

I will be bringing in additional candidates as we narrow down the field. Many great things are happening with the UB Wrestling program and we will not lose our momentum. I hope to announce the hiring of a new assistant coach over the next couple of weeks... please check back soon for more information.

" I am looking forward to wrestling for Buffalo. I have been wrestling at my high school with some of my old high school team mates, and running to stay in shape."

Heiserman was a 3x Michigan State Finalist, 2x Michigan State Champ, and ranked in the Top 10 at 189 lbs.

Incoming freshman Jake Waste reflects on his summer training as he prepares to enter his first year at UB.

"I think this summer what I did the most to prepare for UB was just train. There is nothing better that will get you ready for college or any level than just training. My coach’s would always say “practice makes perfect”, as a kid I would just blow it off. When you start to get older and your muscle memory really starts to kick in you realize that it is a completely true statement. With that being said all I did was train and compete all summer. Focusing on the minor details and working on every move I have. Another big thing that came into my mind was this is a whole new level. While wrestling in high school you will get your normal “puds”, but in college everyone is a D1 wrestler. You have to train like you are wrestling one of the top ranked guys at your weight. In my mind if you do that you will succeed with all of your goals."

Waste is a Top 100 recruit and a five-time National Champion.

The Skinny: When scanning the list of entries, the name that immediately jumps out is Brandon Kingsley. Not just because he’s one of the best young wrestlers in the country, but because he hasn’t popped up often on the Freestyle trail. His only significant results in the style came last year in Cadet Duals where he went undefeated. In his eight bouts there only one didn’t end up in a tech or pin, and that was a 6-0, 4-0 decision.

Kingsley will be my pick to make the finals, and though there are two other returning champions (Oliver Pierce and Brian Murphy) I won’t be picking them to meet Kingsley in the finals.

No. I have a hunch about Sueflohn. He’s a tough bird. He only took 7th here last year, but I see a dream match-up with him and Kingsley on the horizon.

Pierce’s top competition should come from Blake Roulo, who placed 3rd and 4th here in two previous trips to Fargo.

Babcock was undefeated at Junior Duals and 2nd to Cokeley at the Southern Regional.

Cokeley’s only duals loss came to Lubeck.

Falk was 3rd in Cadet GR in ’09.

Hoffman was 3rd at Fila’s with a win over last year’s Cadet Champ, Coover.

Roulo Dominates National Duals; Competes at Fargo with Waste

Two of UB's incoming freshman have been tearing up the mats this off-season. Blake Roulo and Jake Waste each of dominated their competition in the freestyle & greco roman worlds this summer. Recently, Roulo crushed competition at the National Duals, and today, he and future teammate Jake Waste will each seek out double titles at the 2011 USA Wrestling Greco & Freestyle Nationals. Roulo will compete in the 145 weight class in both styles, and Waste will compete at 189. We wish them both the best of luck in their quest for 2 additional national titles!!

Camp Notes

We wrapped-up another successful camp Wednesday. We would like to thank everyone that worked hard to make the camp successful. There were several UB Wrestling Alumni that helped make the camp run smooth this year in addition to the rest of the UB Team, coaching staff and other camp staff members. It was great having Eric Knuutila (1971-1973), Bill Jacoutot (1972-1974), Dean Salvagio (1986-1988), Joe Muscarella (1990-1992), Brian Dowdall (1994-1996), Gary Cooper (1998-2003), Mickey Moran (2004-2009), Justin Farrara (2008-2010), Andrew Stella (2005-2010), and Brian Sheehan (2009-2011) back on campus. In the drilling competition, Wally Maziarz' Team Ugly Ear came in first place with Jake Beichner's Team in second and Andrew Stella's team right behind him in third. John-Martin Cannon's team won the actual team dual meet competition. They rebounded after an early dual meet loss (to Zach Ward's team) to storm back in the bracketed tournament with a dominate win in the finals over Wally Maziarz' team. Andrew Stella's team was consistent throughout the competitions and placed a solid third. James Loomis' Team won the tug-of-war competition after finishing in middle of the pack in the dual meet competition.

Question:

How is Zach Ward looking? He wrestled at my HS alma mater. Is he still projected at 174? I'm hoping he's been hitting the weights hard.

Answer:

Zach Ward has been working exceptionally hard. He is a great young man, good student, etc. He is the kind of student-athlete that coaches love to have. He has improved a great deal in the last year. He actually wrestled most of the year last year at 184 pounds and a few times at 197 pounds as a redshirt. He finished the season with an 11-11 record after starting the year at 1-4. He won the NCCC Open, took 3^rd at the NYS Collegiate B Bracket, and 4^th at the JCC Open. He will be in the mix to start at 184 pounds.

Question:
Do you think that Kevin Smith could move up a weight this year? If so what does 133 like if he is at 141 pounds?

Answer:
Kevin is planning on moving up to 141 pounds this coming season (note: Andrew Schutt is a possible redshirt and Rickey Bronson is looking to certify at 141 pounds as well). He is big right now and is ready to move-up for his final year. Justin Farmer is coming off a good redshirt year where he won 21 matches. He placed at the UB Open, W&J Open, Cleveland State Open, JCC Open, and won the New York State Collegiate B Bracket. Justin will be a redshirt sophomore. Also, Taylor Golba (redshirt junior) has the potential to move to 133 pounds or stay at 125 pounds. He was the starter at the beginning of the season last year before having an injury that he is still recovering from. He started the season on fire and walked through the UB Open but saw limited action after that last year. We also have an incoming freshman that is projected at 133 pounds that placed 6^th, 5^th, 3^rd, and 2^nd in the state of New York.

During our small hiatus, we received two additional questions about the UB Wrestling program. Below are those questions along Coach Beasley's responses.

Question 1:
Josh Peters was having a solid year before fading some against MAC competition last year. Seems that he would be a good wrestler and likely starter at 197 next year. I recently visited the roster page and didn't see his profile. Will he be back next year? Related to this, 184 is open with Jimmy Hamel graduating. Justin Heisserman wrestled at 189 and occasionally 215 in high school. Do you project Heiserman at 184 or 197?

Response:

Jimmy Hamel graduated this year and we will have very good 184 and 197 pound wrestlers in the line-up. Unfortunately, Josh Peters is no long a part of the UB Wrestling Team.

At 184 pounds, we will have one of the following three wrestlers: Ron Majerus, Zach Ward, or Jake Waste. Ron is a redshirt junior who started at 165 pounds as a true freshman. He had a solid year where he placed in the MAC Championships. The following year, he redshirted and placed in several tournaments at 174 pounds. Last season, he again started for us at 174 pounds. Ron placed at both the UB Open and the New York State Collegiate Tournament. He also had a memorable match where he scored multiple takedowns on #1 Nationally Ranked Honeycutt of Edinboro when he wrestled up at 184 pounds. Zach Ward is a redshirt freshman who won an open tournament last year and placed in several others. He won about a dozen matches last year and continues to improve. Jake Waste was one of the top recruits in the country this year. He won five National Championships during his high school career and is looking to add two more at Fargo this month. Jake also was a Minnesota State Champion, placed in a ton of national tournaments, won a college tournament as a junior in high school, and finished high school with a 201-26 career record. Waste or Majerus could also be at 174 pounds this season.

At 197 pounds, we will have one of the following three wrestlers: Tyler Peter, Mibo Aiono, and Justin Heiserman. Tyler will be in his fourth year with the program and has worked very hard and gained a lot of experience over the years. He has wrestled a lot of good competition and is ready to go for next year. Mibo joined the team last year and wrestled up at heavyweight. He plans to drop down to 197 this year and will be big for the weight. He is also very athletic. Justin Heiserman is projected to wrestle 197 pounds. He was ranked in the top 20 in the country at 189 pounds this year and has several very good wins. He was a NHSCA High School Senior All-American, Disney Duals Gold Medalist, two-time Michigan State Champion, three-time Michigan State Finalist, and four-time Michigan State Qualifier. He finished his high school career with a 192-27 record with 116 pins.

Question 2:

Congratulations on a strong season last year and a great recruiting class! UB will be loaded at the lower weight classes next year. The Soria brothers and Arik Robinson have been mentioned as competing for the 125 spot. Last year's starters Taylor Golba (early) and Sean Walton (late) are rarely mentioned but are both tough wrestlers at 125. Kevin Smith at 133 is not likely to be displaced. Andrew Schutt had a strong year at 141. Blake Ruolo comes in at 141/149. Other strong wrestlers will also be pushing for time. 149 is the only lower to mid weight class without an incumbent starter. How do you see competition for the starting lineup playing out?

Response:

I would say that we will be very good at 149 pounds next year. Chris Conti, Wally Maziarz, James Loomis, and Blake Roulo will all probably be 149 pounders. Chris Conti has won several important matches for us in the last three years. He is a very hard worker and great young man. He is getting bigger as he is moving up from 141 pounds and looks great. I think the people that do not get the chance to see him train daily will be impressed with how good he really is. He is a hammer on the mat and is getting very good on his feet. Wally Maziarz is rapidly improving and recently qualified for the World Team Trials in Greco-Roman. Wally also won an open tournament this year. Loomis gained valuable experience last year and wrestled several matches. He is very aggressive and wrestles a high-pace style which makes him exciting to watch. Nothing is set in stone, but there is a good possibility in Roulo redshirt next year. Roulo was one of the best recruits in the country this year and won four straight NHSCA High School National Titles (only the second wrestler to ever do so). Roulo also was a multiple-time All-American, Virginia State Champion, and finished his high school career with a 179-14 career record.

We received one question from our post the other day asking what fans wanted to know about UB Wrestling.

Question:

Do you feel that UB can truly be competitive against the other top teams in NY in the next 3 years? What sets UB apart from the other schools (Cornell, Binghamton, Hofstra) to recruiting the top NY talent?

Answer:

We are competitive with any team in the country. Two years ago, we beat #12 ranked Nebraska. Last year we beat three returning conference champions (Virginia, Edinboro, and Binghmaton). Both Virginia and Edinboro were ranked in the top 20 in the country when we beat them. We qualified 6 underclassmen to the National Tournament last year and had 4 MAC Champions. We had more MAC Champions and more MAC place winners than any school in the conference. For this coming season, we only have one returning starter that will exhaust his eligibility (Kevin Smith). Also, we have the #11 recruiting class in the country coming into UB. There are several things that set us apart from other programs but the most important is the people here at UB. We have a great coaching staff and a very tight-knit team that cares about one another and works very hard. Also, we are bringing in the right kind of student-athletes to UB. Incoming Freshman Roulo Named 2011 NHSCA Wrestler of the Year

Congratulations to incoming freshman, Blake Roulo, on being recognized as the 2011 NHSCA Wrestler of the Year. He will be inducted into the NHSCA Hall of Fame along with 19 other athletes, each representing their respective sport.

Matoaca High School, Ettrick, Virginia

In April, Roulo made NHSCA history by becoming the second wrestler to become a four-time National High School champion. His takedown nine seconds into overtime gave him a 3-1 victory in the 140-pound championship match and the National Seniors championship, to go along with titles in the National Juniors, the National Sophomores and the National Freshman Championships the previous three years. He joins Tyler Beckwith of Greene (N.Y.) High, who accomplished the feat last year and also earned NHSCA National Senior Athlete of the Year honors. The title was a record seventh for Roulo in a NHSCA national event. The Group 3A state champion at 140 pounds as a junior, Roulo was the state runnerup at 145 as a sophomore and third in state at 135 as a freshman. He finished 37-3 and was the Central Region champion at 145 this year, and he posted a career record of 185-14. He will attend the University of Buffalo.

Jake Waste placed 3^rd at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Franklin, Indiana on May 20^th, 2011. He lost to eventual champion Joel Bauman of the Minnesota Storm Wrestling Club 1-0, 1-2, 0-1. In the third place match, he beat Eli Adams of the YES Wrestling Club 0-1, 5-1, 6-4.

By placing 3^rd at the FILA Junior World Team Trials, Jake qualified for the FILA Junior Pan-American Team. He will be competing at the Pan-American Championships in Sao, Brazil. The Pan-American Championships run from June 27^th through July 4^th.

Minnesota State Champ Jake Waste has a long list of accomplishments in the international styles, including a Cadet Double Championship (Freestyle-Greco) in 2009. Late signees Arik Robinson (4x NY State Champ) and Justin Heiserman (2x State Champ) bring this class from good for Buffalo to one of the best in the nation.

Two-time World bronze medalist Justin Lester, previously known as Harry Lester, enters as a strong favorite at the 66 kg division. Lester won his World medals in 2006 and 2007, then was upset in the 2008 Olympic Trials by 18-year old phenom Jake Deitchler. In 2009, Lester made the World Team competing up at 74 kg, and then took the 2010 season off. He returned this year after joining the U.S. Army and dropping back down to 66 kg.

It has been a good season for Lester, who won the U.S. Open for the third time in his career. He also won the Dave Schultz Memorial at 66 kg, then went to Cuba and won the Granma Cup up at 74 kg.

Placing second to Lester in a close final at the U.S. Open was Glenn Garrison, a veteran who has won two U.S. Open titles and has won dozens of international medals but has yet to make a World Team. Garrison has been a consistent contender for a decade. A new challenger in this weight class is former Minnesota star C.P. Schlatter who decided to make a run in Greco-Roman this year. Schlatter was third at the U.S. Open and won the gold at the New York AC International.

Faruk Sahin, who competed at the last two World Championships at this weight class, was injured and has not yet competed this season. Should Sahin enter the field in Oklahoma City, he will be a top contender. A naturalized citizen, Sahin is excited about the prospect of competing in the 2011 World Championships, which is being hosted in his birth nation, Turkey.

This weight class has a ton of young talent, many who are still showing improvement as they gain experience. Placing fourth at the U.S. Open was Pat Smith, who came through the age-group Greco-Roman program with the Minnesota Storm and is talented in this style. Ben Sanchez, who has continued to excel with the USOEC program at Northern Michigan was fifth at the Open. Taking sixth at the U.S. Open was John Cox, a former star for the U.S. Naval Academy who now competes for the U.S Marines. Cox also won the Northeast Senior Regional this year. Tanner Anders, another USOEC product, placed seventh at the U.S. Open.

Others in the draw will include Northern Plains Regional champion RaVaughn Perkins, who is also a member of the 2011 Junior World Team. Qualifying from the University Nationals is 66 kg champion Bo Beckman and true second finisher Wally Maziarz. The top two University Nationals placers at 63 kg can also enter the event, champion Joe Colon and runner-up James Clark.

The return of Harry Lester brings additional talent and experience to this division. Because he has won a World medal in the last four years, Lester gets to sit out until the best-of-three finals series, which is a significant advantage. Faruk Sahin, who has held this spot the last two seasons, will be a strong threat if he is able to return. Glenn Garrison and C.P. Schlatter have had strong seasons and look to battle for a spot in the finals.

UB Summer Camps

The University at Buffalo is offering summer camps in 13 different sports this year at a variety of levels. Campers will get the chance to practice on the same fields as the Bulls teams while receiving expert coaching from some of the Bulls head coaches and athletes.

Head Baseball Coach Ron Torglaski will bring 22 years of coaching experience to his three camps, which will be run according to age groups. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Reggie Witherspoon will be running a college prospect camp for grades 10 and up, two separate week-long camps and a team camp while Women’s Basketball head coach Linda Hill-Macdonald will run a developmental camp for girls in grades 4-12.

Head Football Coach Jeff Quinn will run an Offensive/Defensive Line specific camp along with two one-day camps and two youth camps. Men’s Soccer will run a camp for Junior Booters, Bulls, Young Bulls, High School Elite, Strikers and Goalkeepers. Women’s Soccer will run a total of seven camps including Kickin’ and Krackin’, Goalkeepers, Juniors, Open Girls and College Prospects.

2010 Mid-American Conference Men’s Champion Head Swimming Coach Andy Bashor will run a 5-day swimming camp. There will also be a Diving camp conducted over six days in June by Diving Coach Karla Helder.

A three-day Softball camp will be offered as well as a three day Track & Field camp. Men’s and Women’s Tennis will be offering two separate camps open to both Boys and Girls aged 10 through 18.

Women’s Volleyball will offer an All Skills camp as well as a Position (Setter, Hitter and Libero) camp and a High Potential camp.

Mid-American Conference Wrestling Coach of the Year Jim Beichner will run a Team camp as well as a Youth camp, which is slated to take place in the newly refurbished Wrestling Complex in Alumni Arena.

Intermat Gives Bulls #13 Recruiting Class Ranking

The Bulls recruiting efforts have been recognized once again, this time by Intermat. Intermat ranks the Bulls' incoming recruiting class at #13 in the nation. This is the highest ranking ever for a recruiting class by Intermat.

While the #13 ranking is another school best, I can't agree with the comment about the Bulls always being at the back of the MAC Conference after their 2011 performance. Although unable to pull of the MAC team championship, UB had more champions (141 through 165 lbs.), place winners, and national qualifiers than anyone else in the conference this year.

Commentary: For a program normally towards the back of the MAC (Mid-American Conference) standings, this is an unexpected yet impressive recruiting class. The Bulls should be commended on their efforts, while Jim Beichner and staff hope that this group of wrestlers can help them make a step towards overall relevance as a program -- as well as compete with Central Michigan for supremacy in the MAC. Buffalo has not had an All-American since 2004 (Kyle Cerminara), and before that the drought goes back to 1991 (Dan Engles).

UB Press Release - Ten UB Teams Over 975 in Latest APR Report

The Bulls wrestling program has improved their APR more than any other sport at the university over the last four years. See the entire press release below.

BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight year, the University at Buffalo athletic department has seen all of its 20 intercollegiate sports finish above the cut line in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that were released today.

All 20 of the Bulls' programs finished the multi-year rate – which encompasses four years from 2006-07 to 2009-10 – above the minimum score of 925 out of 1,000. The APR, in its seventh year of existence, is a four-year rolling rate and focuses on each sport, not the institution’s overall performance and measures the retention and eligibility of student-athletes receiving athletic aid, and the eligibility measure is based on NCAA and UB eligibility standards.

In this year's report, the Bulls saw 16 teams record scores above 950 and 10 programs net out above 975, the most in school history. Four teams had perfect single-year rates of 1,000 – men's cross country, women's basketball, women's tennis and men's swimming – while women's tennis has a perfect four-year rate of 1,000 and was honored by the NCAA for that mark.

The UB football program continues to make huge strides, recording a four-year rate of 930 – the highest score in the seven years of the APR – up from a mark of 879 back in 2005-06. Other major success stories include the UB baseball program, whose four-year rate was 951 in 2009-10, up from 907 in 2005-06, and the Bulls' wrestling program, that has climbed from an 886 score in 2005-06 to a four-year rate of 967 this year (a jump of 81 points, the most of any UB program).

Of UB's 20 intercollegiate programs, 13 of them stayed the same or improved in the single-year from 2008-09 to this past year.

"I am as proud of our continued efforts to improve our retention and graduation rates, that are reflected so positively in this latest Academic Progress Rate report, as any championship we have won during my tenure here at UB,” said Warde Manuel, Vice President and Director of Athletics. “We have a tremendous staff and student-athletes that have bought into the culture of success in every facet of what we do, none more important than graduation and competing for excellence both on and off the fields of play.

“I am extremely appreciative of all of our coaches for continuing to spend the effort necessary to bring the right student-athletes to the University at Buffalo,” said Manuel, “and reinforcing the importance of balancing academics and athletics in the challenging arena of Division I athletics.”

Class Overview:

The staff at Buffalo are on to something. After crowning 4 MAC Champions and sending a school-record, 6, individuals to NCAA’s, Jim Beichner has facility upgrades in the works and Frank Beasley, who works the recruiting trail tirelessly, has one of the best hauls of the year.

At the top, Arik Robinson became just the 4^th four-timer in NYS history. This season he was named Most Outstanding at both the state tournament and Eastern States, the highest regarded regular season tournament in the Empire State.

Roulo has long been in the national picture. A 3-time Fargo AA and this year’s Beast runner-up, Roulo became just the second wrestler to ever win four class titles at NHSCA’s.

Lozano was a state runner-up this year, earning his second state medal. He’s also made finals appearances in 5 Counties, Doc Buchanan, and NHSCA’s.

Waste has a lengthy resume in both folk and international styles. He just won a Fila GR title in April after winning a state title in Minnesota. In 2009 he became the 6^th ever Cadet Triple Crown Winner.

Heiserman was a three-time state finalist, two-time champ and an NHSCA placer this year.

Why They’re Here:

The Bulls nabbed quality kids at a number of weight classes that will keep that, at minimum, competitive in the MAC for years to come. With this group, look for an increased Buffalo presence in the rankings and at the NCAA tournament in the future.

Why They’re Not Higher:

Last year the Bulls brought in the Soria Brothers to man the lightweights. And they’ve performed better than expected in open competition last year. So Robinson starting isn’t a foregone conclusion.

This class, while heavy on ‘prospects’ in every sense of the word, lacks a #1 type guy. Their impact to their program is immediate, which is why they’re #11. But to become competitive nationally, the individuals here still have so work to do.

Bulls Announce Three 2011 Recruits to Join Waste, Roulo

The Buffalo wrestling coaching staff has announced three more outstanding talents to the 2011-12 recruiting class, further making the argument that the incoming freshman class will be among the best in all of Division I. Four-time New York state champion Arik Robinson, 2011 California state runner-up Justin Lozano and two-time Michigan champion Justin Heiserman signed on to become a Bull, adding depth and filling important needs for the team.

"It's the sign of a good program to add diversity from different states. We have wrestlers from at least seven different states now on the team, and every different state has its own style," said head coach Jim Beichner. "When you bring that diversity in, the wrestlers begin to teach each other and you want that to make them all better."

The team now has four recruits ranked among the top 100 in the nation, with only Big 10 members Ohio State and Wisconsin with more.

"We have six guys committed to us that are ranked in the top ten in their weight classes and we think they will make a huge impact on this team," said assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Beasley. "Not all of them were 'need' weight classes but they were 'wants' because they're all so good."

Robinson, from Peru High School in upstate New York, recently became just the fifth wrestler ever to win the state title in each of his four years of high school. After winning the title this past season, he also earned the honor of Most Outstanding Wrestler. As a junior, he finished fourth at the NHSCA High School Nationals, and in other national tournaments, Robinson won the 2011 Eastern States Classic after winning previously in 2009 and finishing third in 2010. For his career, Robinson owns a 180-10 record with 108 pins.

"He's one of the very best to ever come out of New York state," said Beasley. "He's tough and very hard nosed and we're very happy to have him, we just couldn't pass up one of the best wrestlers ever to come out of New York."

After finding success in the NCAA tournament with Wolverine State natives Andrew Schutt and Brett Correll, the Bulls will also welcome in Michigan standout Justin Heiserman. Ranked as the top 189-pound wrestler of all Division III high schools in the state, Heiserman is also the ranked the ninth best senior in Michigan by Michigan Grappler and will likely compete at 197 pounds for UB.

During his career at Dundee High School, Heiserman was a two-time state champion and also was a runner up, earning a spot in the finals three times in his four years while finishing with a 192-27 career record. At the Disney Duals in 2010, he went undefeated for a gold medal win and earned All-American status after finishing eighth at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

"We really feel that he can be a difference-maker for us, both academically and athletically," Beichner said. "We're very happy to welcome him to the program."

Justin Lozano joins the team from West Coast power Selma High School, where he recently finished second at the CIF State Championship in the 171 pound division, improving from a fifth-place spot as a junior. Intermat has ranked him as the 13^th-best wrestler at 171 pounds and the seventh-best senior at that weight. The Open Mat sees him as the ninth-best prospect at 174 pounds.

"He brings a different style and mentality from the West Coast," Beasley said. "It diversifies the team a little bit. He has traveled all over the country and has wrestled some of the best guys in the country."

At the NHSCA Junior Nationals, Lozano placed second, improving from a third-place finish at the Sophmore Nationals. In the prestigious Super 32 tournament, Lozano finished fourth in 2009 and in Selma's lone participation in the Reno Tournament of Champions, Lozano finished sixth as a freshman.

"We're happy to add these three to a class of what we believe to be between nine and twelve wrestlers," Beichner said. The biggest thing is that we'll cover eight different weights with this incoming class and that's what we needed. We feel that this recruiting class will end up being the best recruiting class that this program has ever seen. We hope each recruit will positively effect us socially, academically and athletically."

Beichner also announced that junior Desi Green is no longer a part of the wrestling program. Green was dismissed from the team due to multiple violations of team and university policies.

On April 25, 2011, UB Division of Athletics held their annual Athlete Academic Celebration. UB Wrestler Chris Conti was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. Below is a brief description of what defines the Unsung Hero:

"Dedication, unselfishness, and contribution to the team currently defines the Unsung Hero Award. This nominee excels in all areas not only for their team but for the entire Athletics Department. He/she attends AFA’s, community service events and other programs offered by the Athletics Department. He/she does all of this with tremendous character, composure, and the utmost respect for all student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. One may ask how this person goes unnoticed, which only adds to this persons unselfish behaviors. But after one conversation with him/her, one can easily see that this student-athlete deserves more recognition. Not for how well he/she perform athletically or his/her successes in the classroom, but for their effort and care towards their teammates, other teams and this Athletic Department. They understand that the success of the team comes before the success of an individual. Also that no matter how good one performs, each student-athlete needs to give back because this opportunity is a privilege, not a right."

UB Wrestling Gives Back

On Saturday, April 30, the UB Wrestling team took part in a community service project at the Niagara Falls Gospel Rescue Mission in Niagara Falls, NY. Both athletes and coaches took part in the effort as they removed weeds from garden beds, planting new greenery, and assisted in other landscaping tasks.

Wrestling committee recommends escape clause

The NCAA Wrestling Committee is recommending a new rule that would allow the offensive wrestler to grant an escape to his opponent and choose to start in a neutral position.

Committee members believe the change will speed up the action.

“It will save time in positioning wrestlers,” said Bob Bubb, who is completing his term as NCAA wrestling secretary-rules editor (he will be succeeded by Ohio Northern wrestling coach Ron Beaschler). “This way, you eliminate any cautions that may occur, and it should speed up the match.”

High school wrestling adopted this rule recently, and it has received favorable reviews from referees and coaches at that level.

Some in the wrestling community equate the change to an intentional walk in baseball or softball. If a wrestler feels his chances are better from a neutral-position start, then the option to grant the escape saves time.

That recommendation and others made during the committee’s annual meeting April 11-14 in Indianapolis must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which meets via conference call on May 11. If approved, the recommendations will go into effect for the 2011-12 season.

Stalling

The committee also recommended new criteria that better define the stalling rule and help ensure its consistent enforcement.

Stalling is defined as one or both wrestlers attempting to avoid wrestling action as an offensive or defensive strategy.

Wrestlers who consistently retreat to the edge of the mat, make no effort to move back into the wrestling area and fail to initiate action will be cited for stalling.

The rule will be applied in the following instances:

A wrestler must only move forward or in a circular motion on a neutral start before making contact. A participant who steps backward is stalling unless it is to sprawl from an opponent’s takedown attempt.

A wrestler is not permitted to back away from the opponent without creating action.

A wrestler near the edge of the mat cannot step out of bounds unless it is to sprawl from an opponent’s takedown attempt or when interlocked. A participant will be called for stalling if he kicks out from a lower leg hold when this action results in the defending wrestler going out of the wrestling area.

A wrestler who flees or attempts to flee the wrestling area as a means of avoiding being scored upon will be called for stalling. The committee considers fleeing as an attempt by a wrestler to avoid wrestling action; thus, it is considered a form of stalling and should be similarly penalized.

Wrestlers must make an attempt to sustain active wrestling and remain in the circle. The offensive and defensive stalling positions include:

An offensive wrestler who does not aggressively attempt to break down the opponent will be called for stalling.

Either wrestler pushing his opponent out of bounds to prevent scoring will be cited for stalling.

The offensive wrestler grasping the defensive wrestler’s leg(s) with both hands or arms will be called for stalling, unless such action is designed to break down the opponent for the purpose of securing a fall or to prevent an escape or reversal.

Any wrestler who repeatedly grasps or interlocks his hands around a leg without attempting an offensive move will be called for stalling.

A defensive wrestler must initiate action to escape or reverse the opponent, or he will be called for stalling.

A wrestler who repeatedly applies the legs while in the rear-standing position is stalling. An exception to this is when the defensive wrestler is in a standing position, the offensive wrestler is allowed reaction time to attempt to bring the opponent back to the mat.

“Now the first violation for stalling will be a warning, and then it will be a one-point penalty for a second violation,” Bubb said. “The third and subsequent violations will be one point, plus the opponent will be given the choice of the starting position.”

There is no longer a disqualification penalty involved in the stalling rule. The referee should no longer feel pressured to stop the match due to stalling.

Injury timeouts

The committee has become concerned that wrestlers have been using the injury timeout rule as a strategy to avoid wrestling action or being scored on.

Members are thus recommending that a wrestler who signals for an injury timeout that requires the 90-second injury clock to start should be penalized one point. It will be up to the official to determine if the one-point penalty should be applied.

The committee supports the current position that only a referee may call a timeout and has the prerogative to stop a match to determine whether an injury has occurred.

The rule change is not intended to change how officials are determining injuries.

Flagrant misconduct

Another recommendation involves the suspension of a coach or institutional representative for flagrant misconduct in the pre-match, in-match or post-match periods.

Persons cited for flagrant misconduct will not be allowed to participate in the team’s subsequent event. If flagrant misconduct occurs during the last event of the season, the suspension carries over to the first event of the next season. If someone from the medical team is cited, the coach would have to serve the penalty.

The referee will alert the NCAA national coordinator of officials as soon as possible after the match that a flagrant misconduct violation occurred.

“If a flagrant misconduct is called against a coach or institutional representative, that person has to leave the premises,” Bubb said. “The coach or institutional representative will be reported to the NCAA. It will come to the chair of that particular division for possible reprimand.”

In addition, the offending contestant will not be credited with points earned before the incident, nor will he receive placement points or an individual tournament award. Other contestants will remain in their respective positions. In dual-team advancement tournaments, the flagrant misconduct penalty points are deducted only for the session in which the offense occurred.

Blake Roulo Signs National Letter of Intent for UB

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo Bulls wrestling team continues to build its program upward, both literally and figuratively. Adding to the excitement of a $400,000 renovation to its facilities, the UB staff announced the signing of Blake Roulo of Matoaca High School in Petersburg, VA. He is a 149-pound prospect who recently became just the second wrestler ever to win four NHSCA titles and is also ranked as the top senior in Virginia out of all weight classes.

"I'm excited about having the opportunity to work with such an outstanding athlete," head coach Jim Beichner said. "We look forward to many years of athletic and academic success here at UB."

Earlier this month, Roulo defeated Travis Himmelman out of Colorado 3-1 in the finals of the NHSCA (National High School Coaches Association) senior nationals. In order to become the second four-time champion ever, Roulo had to go through six of the top seniors in the entire country, and he did it with ease. In other national tournaments, Blake finished second at the Freestyle Nationals and has third- and fourth-place finishes at the Greco Roman Nationals. In regular season tournaments, he performed well at the prestigious Beast of the East Championships, recording second, third and fourth overall finishes in his high school career.

"We're trying to take that next step," said assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Beasley. "We've done very well with guys that weren't 'blue chip' athletes and I think guys that are like Blake and Jake (Waste) will help take us to another level – from competing for a MAC title to winning a MAC title and reaching all of our goals as a team."

After wrestling in the 145-pound weight class, Blake is projected to compete right away to make an impact on the 2011-12 team.

"He has shown that he is as good as anybody in the country regardless of weight class and we expect that they are the type of athletes that if they are called to step in to the lineup that they will be ready to go and be difference-makers," Beasley said of Roulo as well as fellow recruit Jake Waste.

Roulo joins Waste as the first two members of what is shaping up to be a very talented recruiting class. Waste, who committed during the early signing period in November, recently won his fifth national tournament at the FILA Jr. Greco Nationals. In his six wins en route to the title, he allowed his opponents to score only two points combined.

UB Singee, Jake Waste, won his 5th National Title last night in Cleveland. He was competing at 79 kg and dominated his way to the FILA Junior National Greco Roman Championship. In the quarters, he won 5-0, 4-0. In the semifinals, he won 6-0, 8-1. In the finals, Jake won 5-0, 5-1. He was dominant throughout the tournament. Waste will compete in the Senior division this weekend. Good Luck Jake!

CLEVELAND, OH - Following one of the most successful seasons in program history, including a record six national tournament qualifiers, head wrestling coach Jim Beichner was named the Mid American Conference coach of the year, as announced today by the conference. The honor comes in addition to Beichner being named NYS Division I Coach of the Year twice (1996, 2004), East Coast Wrestling Association Coach of the Year and the Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year during his 16 seasons at Buffalo.

"I am very excited for our program to receive this award. It is truly an honor to receive this from my peers in the MAC," Beichner said. "We have a great group of coaches and programs within the MAC and I have a tremendous amount of respect for each program and our fellow MAC coaches."

Buffalo tied with Kent State as both programs sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship, the most of any MAC wrestling program. After sending a program-Division I record six wrestlers to the NCAA championships, Beichner has now guided 41 student athletes to the national tournament during his tenure.

In addition, Buffalo finished third in the 2011 MAC Wrestling Tournament as Andrew Schutt (141), Desi Green (149),Mark Lewandowski (157) and John-Martin Cannon (165) each won their weight class for the Bulls. The third-place finish tied the program's best finish in the conference tournament since joining.

"The award is really the result of our athletes beginning with our four MAC Champions and it permeates down to the five wrestlers that placed in the MAC championships and through the entire team, our backups and red-shirts," Beichner added.

At the NCAA tournament, Buffalo wrestlers won six matches, highlighted by sophomore Mark Lewandowski earning a top-12 finish, just one win away from becoming an All-American. All six of the national qualifiers will return in 2011-12 as the team will only lose three wrestlers from the team.

It was not just the work of the wrestlers, Beichner said, but also all the members of the coaching staff.

"There is no chance that I would have received this honor with the efforts of my assistant coaches, Frank Beasley, Ricky Deubel and Jeff Catrabone and strength & conditioning coach Nate Harvey. It's also an award that has to be shared with our trainer - Allison Zulawski, the administration (sport supervisor Paul Vecchio) and other administrative support staff. There are a few other support staff members people that need to be thanked - Danny Bishop, Administrative Assistant, Joe Muscarella and Micky Moran. I am extremely lucky that we have so much help and support. With their help, we are definitely headed in the right direction."

Kent State's Dustin Kilgore was awarded the Wrestler of the Year award and Ohio's Jeremy Johnson was named Freshman of the Year. All three awards were voted on by each of the conference's six head wrestling coaches.

"I sincerely appreciate this recognition and hope that our program wins future awards such as this one because we are consistently winning MAC Championships, producing all-americans and future NCAA champions. I am very proud of everyones efforts and we plan to do even more," Beichner said.

UB Press Release - Kevin Smith Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Redshirt Junior Kevin Smith became the sixth Buffalo Bulls wrestler to earn a trip to the NCAA tournament this season after earning an at-large bid during the selection process held Wednesday night. The draw was for the 50 possible wrestlers who did not earn an automatic qualification. The six Buffalo national qualifiers were the most since the Bulls joined the Mid American Conference.

The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria without priority order: head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI), coaches ranking and number of matches contested at that weight class. The Mid American Conference earned five of the at-large bids and, in total, will send 23 wrestlers to the national tournament, to be held in Philadelphia, PA.

Smith led the team with 34 wins this season and will be making his second straight trip to the tournament. In his first round match up, he will face Thomas Mitchell of Liberty. Mitchell - a fellow redshirt junior - finished the season with a 15-10 record. The winner of the match will then face either number two overall seed Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State or Missouri's Nathan McCormick.

At 141 pounds, Andrew Schutt earned his first trip to the national tournament after winning his bracket at the MAC championship. Coming in unseeded, the sophomore will face a tough first-round opponent in third-seeded Borislav Novachkov of Cal Poly. A redshirt junior, Novachkov lost only one match all season and finished with a 27-1 record. The winner of the match will face the winner of Lock Haven's Matthew Bronson or the winner of a play-in match between Levi Jones of Boise State or Hicks Manson of Cornell.

In the 149-pound bracket, Desi Green was rewarded with the twelfth seed by the committee and will look to use his high draw to make the All-American round in what will be his third straight appearance in the national tournament. He will first have to face Eric Terrazas of Illinois, who is a true junior who finished 24-9 for the season. The winner of that match will then take on either fifth seed Jamal Parks of Oklahoma State or Daniel Zilverberg of Minnesota.

Mark Lewandowski will try to maintain his recent hot streak in to the NCAA tournament after winning the 157-pound championship at the MAC championship. In the first round, the redshirt sophomore from Depew, NY will face Josh Condon of Chattanooga. A fellow redshirt sophomore, Condon went 24-6 during the regular season. The winner will face either Alex Medved of Gardner Webb, or fourth seeded Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State.

Fresh off a championship at 165 pounds and the honor of Most Outstanding Wrestler at the MAC Championship, junior John-Martin Cannon will need to keep his intense offensive productivity going in to the national tournament, his second appearance in as many years. After wrestling a challenging schedule in the regular season, it appears that Cannon could be ready to take the next step up on the national scene. Standing in his way will be Lehigh's Brandon Hatchett, a redshirt junior who was 17-9 overall this year. The winner will face either second seed Andrew Howe of Wisconsin or Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly.

The final Bull making the trip to Philadelphia will be heavyweight Brett Correll, who earned one of the MAC's automatic qualifying bids after placing fourth at the conference tournament. As a whole, the MAC will send five of the six starting heavyweights to the national tournament. Correll will square off against eleventh seed Tucker Lane of Nebraska in the first round. Lane, a redshirt sophomore like Correll, finished the regular season with a 29-7 record.

The NCAA tournament will begin Thursday, Mar. 17 with the opening rounds in the morning before the second round is wrestled in the evening of that day. It will be a double-elimination tournament.

Records Fall as Bulls Finish Third at MAC Championships

DEKALB, IL - The Buffalo Bulls won a conference- and program-best four individual titles and finished third only to champion Central Michigan and Kent State at the Mid American Conference Championship Sunday afternoon.

The third-place finish is tied for the best in program history. The team will also send at least five wrestlers to the NCAA tournament, another program best. John-Martin Cannon also became the first Bull wrestler to ever win Outstanding Wrestler, capping a record-shattering day for the program.

The run of titles began at 141 pounds, with Andrew Schuttbeating Central Michigan's Scott Mattingly in sudden-victory overtime, 6-1. After a scoreless first period, Mattingly earned the lead on an escape. The 1-0 lead carried over to the third period, when Schutt tied it with an escape of his own. A potential game-winning penalty point for Schutt was waved off, pushing the match to overtime. Schutt just missed a pin but wound up with a takedown and three near-fall points to win it 6-1.

"He had to wrestle through some adversity but he came out of it," said head coach Jim Beichner. "People call him a gunslinger – he's dangerous and in overtime he almost pinned him. What a great story, he came in here and did a great job."

Next up was junior Desi Green, looking to become the team's first back-to-back MAC champ since Mark Budd in 2006 and 2007. The Henrietta, NY native used an early takedown and took a 2-1 lead in to the third period against Central Michigan's Donnie Corby. An escape sealed the deal and a 3-1 win. Green will now head to the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, the second wrestler to do so under Beichner.

"Desi has turned into an all-around great wrestler," Beichner said. "He's a two-time MAC champ and he could probably become the all-time wins leader at Buffalo. He's breaking all the records and doing all the right stuff."

Despite the title, Beichner knows Green is capable of so much more, adding "he just needs to know that he has a lot left to accomplish. He's a guy that wants to be an All-American, not just an all-time wins leader. That should be just a bonus."

The streak of titles continued with Mark Lewandowski versus Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch at 157 pounds. It promised to be a thriller and it lived up to every expectation, with Lewandowski beating the Huskies senior in a come-from-behind win. After leading 4-1 through the first period, Lewandowski found himself in trouble in the second, getting reversed and giving up two near-fall points to trail 5-4 heading to the third. After giving up two more near-fall points, Lewandowski reversed Deutsch before being reversed himself and facing a 9-6 deficit midway through the period. After making an escape, the Depew, NY sophomore took down Deutsch and scored riding time to win the title.

"Mark had a lead and lost it because he wrestles a very funky way. It was a back-and-forth match and was one of the most exciting matches of the day, probably the weekend," Beichner said. "For him to show as much courage as he did to make that last-second takedown and ride him out was just phenomenal. He has been wrestling so well lately that I'm just so pleased for him."

Hoping to win the team's fourth-straight individual title, John-Martin Cannon took on number one seed Mike Miller of Central Michigan. A takedown put him up 2-1 after one period, but Miller used an escape and a takedown to go up 4-3 through two periods. Not ready to go quietly, Cannon used an escape and a late takedown in the last ten seconds of the match to win 6-5. For his effort in beating the top two seeds en route to his first career title, Cannon was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

"He was just ready and he was outstanding," Beichner said. "Here is a guy that wrestled 19 or more of the top 33 guys in the country, probably one of the toughest schedules in the country. He comes out here and found a way to win a MAC championship seeded third."

Aside from the four titles, Buffalo placed nine total wrestlers in the top four, another program record. Kevin Smith beat NIU's Kevin Fanta 4-2 in sudden victory overtime to claim third at 133 pounds. He still has NCAA tournament hopes but must wait for the wildcard announcements to decide his postseason fate. Sean Waltonlost a tough 3-2 decision to Central Michigan's Christian Cullinan to place fourth and Jimmy Hamel ended his career in Buffalo with a fourth-place finish at 184 pounds.

Brian Sheehan also finished fourth, losing in triple overtime to Northern Illinois' Mike Lukowski, 3-1. Brett Correll was awarded third place at heavyweight due to a medical forfeit by Ohio's Jeremy Johnson. Due to the conference being allocated four automatic qualifiers at heavyweight, Correll will be making his first career appearance at the NCAA tournament, the fifth Bull to make it.

While waiting for wildcard announcements, the five Buffalo wrestlers will prepare for the national tournament with each vying for an All-American classification. The tournament will run March 17-19.

"Our assistant coaches did a phenomenal job this year. Frank Beasley and Ricky Deubel had our guys ready to go. They were all in great shape and physically healthy. A lot of the credit should go to them," Beichner said. "I think we did really good things. I'm proud of every single guy on my team. They put forth strong efforts and gave us a chance to win this tournament."

"Most importantly, we were here to get national qualifiers and we've never had more than four but we're leaving today with five and hopefully one more," he added. We've never had more than eight place - today we had nine place. We did some things this week that were special, things that I will never forget."

The MAC is going to automatically qualify the following number of wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships... 125 (1), 133 (2), 141 (1), 149 (1), 157 (3), 165 (1), 174 (2), 184 (1), 197 (2), and 285 (4). That means that the MAC will have 18 automatic qualifiers before the wildcards are selected.

The final RPI ranking (strength of schedule) also came out with the following UB Wrestling ranked...Kevin Smith #21 at 133 pounds, Andrew Schutt #19 at 141 pounds, Desi Green #8 at 149 pounds, Mark Lewandowski #18 at 157 pounds, John-Martin Cannon #31 at 165 pounds, and Brett Correll #28 at heavyweight.

The third and final Coaches Panel Ranking also came out recently with the following UB Wrestlers ranked... Kevin Smith #21 at 133 pounds, Desi Green #14 at 149 pounds, and Mark Lewandowski #25 at 157 pounds.

Coach Beasley's NIU Wrap-Up

I thought the team preformed very well in our final dual meet of the season. We wrestled conference rival Northern Illinois University in front of 1,500 to 2,000 people. We raised $30,000 for the Jeff Parker Foundation and Carly's Club. It was a great event and a big thanks goes out to all of our sponsors, the Parker family, and to the UB Volley Ball Team (their entire team volunteered to help at the event).

Also, it was our senior day and we honored our three graduating seniors: John Crisafulli, Brian Sheehan, and Jimmy Hamel. John has spent four years on our team and has wrestled at 133 and 141 pounds. He has consistently been one of the hardest workers in our room day in and day out. He has wrestle many matches at UB and is the third member of his immediate family to wrestle at UB. Brian Sheehan transferred into UB last season and immediately made an impact. He wrestled his way into the starting line-up his first season and has again started for us this year. He placed at the UB Open, the New York State Collegiate Tournament, and the MAC Championships during his tenure here. Brian wrestled at 165, 174, and 197 pounds at UB. Jimmy Hamel has been on the UB team for five years and is a four year starter. He has broken records and is going to remain a fixture in our record books for a long time. He is 2nd all time in career wins at UB will 116 and counting. He is already a 2X National Qualifier, University Freestyle All-American, and has been ranked as high as 11th in the country. He wrestled at 184 and 197 pounds during his career at UB.

We started the match at 197 pounds. Brian Sheehan wrestled his first match up at 197 pounds (he was our starter earlier in the year at 174 pounds before being injured and emerging as the 197 pound starter). He went out on senior day with a bang as he controlled his opponent and wrestled a very smart match. He was the aggressor and won a hard-fought battle over a larger opponent. I am excited to see him pull some more "upsets" at the MAC Tournament.

Brett Correll lost a tight match at heavyweight in overtime. He caught an accidental head-bunt about thirty seconds into the match. He busted his nose open pretty badly and soldiered through the match. He will be healthy and ready to perform at the MAC Tournament.

Sean Walton dropped a tight overtime match at 125 pounds. He put his opponent on his back and nearly pinned him (of course I thought he had him pinned for about 15 seconds). However, he was scored on in overtime to drop a heart-breaker. Sean has been very close to coming up with a big win in the last few weeks against ranked wrestlers and is due to win some of the close ones at MACs.

At 133 pounds, Kevin Smith dominated his opponent and hit the slickest duck-under that I have seen from any wrestler this year. He used a variety of take downs to dominate his opponent. Kevin looks great right now and is peaking at the right time. When he is wrestling well, he is as good as anyone in the country.

In one of the two featured matches of the day, Andrew Schutt took on Tristen DeShazer at 141 pounds. DeShazer is a nationally ranked wrestler that finished in the top 16 at the NCAA National Tournament two years ago and is known for his ability to end matches with a pin. Schutt was wrestling his first match in over a month since sustaining an injury at the New York State Collegiate Tournament. Schutt gave up the first take down early in the match but soldiered back with a strong third period. He started the third period down 3-4, but scored an escape to tie the match before scoring a take down late in the third period by throwing DeShazer down and keeping him flat on his stomach for he remaining twenty seconds of the match. Schutt will be even better by the MAC Tournament and is going to do big things at MACs and Nationals.

Schutt re-energized the team going into the half-time. Desi Green kept the energy going after the half-time by easily winning at 149 pounds. He beat his opponent by a 4-0 score. The wrestler from NIU tried to keep Desi away and hold him out, but was unable to shut his attacks down. I certainly expect Desi to be a high All-American that is knocking on the door of a National Title this season.

Mark Lewandowski won a wild match in the other featured match against two-time NCAA National Qualifier and MAC Champion Brian Deutsch. There was controversy in the match as Mark scored a reversal with about a minute left in the first period. However, at the end of the first period, the referee waved off the points and Deutsch was able to get out the the first period ahead 2-1. going into the third period, the match was tied but Deutsch had a significant amount of riding time (thanks to the waived off reversal call). Mark scored the escape to tie the match and send it to overtime. Mark showed the heart of a champion by scoring a beautiful take down in overtime to win the match. It was another great win for Mark as he positioned himself as a legitimate All-American threat.

John-Martin Cannon continued his string of impressive showings with another dominate win. He got after his opponent right from the start and was aggressive throughout the match. He scored on a variety of take downs and ended the match with seven take downs. He looked like an All-American in this match.

At 174 pounds, Ron Majerus got back on track with a solid win. He scored four take downs in the match. He was dominate throughout the match but let-up a little in the closing seconds and gave-up a take down to finish with a 9-6 win. Ron is turning it on when it counts most going into the MAC Championships.

Jimmy Hamel wrestled the last match of his storied career at Alumni Arena at 184 pounds against a very tough Brad Dieckhaus. Jimmy started slow and never got himself wrestling his match. He allowed Dieckhaus to control the pace and tempo of the match and he ultimately lost in a multiple overtime match. Jimmy should see him in the MAC semifinals and I am confident that he will avenge this loss and win a MAC Championship.

UB Press Release: Bulls Rout Northern Illinois on Senior Day

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo wrestling team ended its regular season on a high note Sunday afternoon, beating Mid American Conference rival Northern Illinois, 22-9. It was also the second annual Takedown Cancer fundraiser, and the wrestling program helped raise over $28,000 for the Jeff Parker Foundation and Carly's Club of Western New York.

The match began with senior Brian Sheehan wrestling for the first time at 197 pounds. He excelled defensively and used a first-period takedown to win the match 3-2 over Mike Lukowski. The Huskies then took the next two matches before the Bulls reeled off six straight wins.

Kevin Smith won his team leading 31st match of the year, dominating Kevin Fanta at 133 pounds with two takedowns, an escape and over a minute of riding time. The first takedown was Smith's 100th career takedown, making him just the tenth wrestler in Buffalo program history to reach 100 takedowns in a career.

Making his return to the 141-pound division, sophomore Andrew Schutt earned an important win over Tristan DeShazer. After missing over a month of action due to injury, Schutt scored a third-period escape and takedown after trailing through two periods, sealing a comeback and a 6-4 win. The decision gave Buffalo a 9-6 lead in the dual, a lead it would never relinquish.

Desi Green finished the MAC season undefeated with a 4-0 shutout of Vince Castillo. Green went up 3-0 after two periods, and rode out his opponent for the entire third period to earn a riding time point. It was Green's 98th career win, and the Henrietta, NY junior is still on track to win match number 100 at some point before the end of the season, making him the first Buffalo junior ever to do so.

In the most critical match of the night, sophomore Mark Lewandowski won a sudden victory overtime match with Bryan Deutsch, a two-time national qualifier who came in to the match ranked 21 in the country at 157 pounds. After trailing 2-1 following the first period, Lewandowski got busy in period two, earning two near fall points, a penalty point and an escape to pull the score to 5-5 going into the third period. Lewandowski escaped but Deutsch had riding time at the end of the period, forcing a sudden victory overtime period. Midway through the bonus time, Lewandowski scored a takedown to earn the upset.

"He did it in a way that left no doubt today," head coach Jim Beichner said. "He has been a winner for quite some time now, I can't even remember the last time he lost. Mark found a way to win"

Buffalo earned its only bonus points of the night at 165 pounds. John-Martin Cannon rode his recent hot streak with another offensive outburst, recording seven takedowns in a 15-6 major decision over Matt Mougin. The junior now sits in sole possession of fifth place for career takedowns as he currently has 116.

In the 174 pound match, Buffalo earned its final win of the afternoon, as Ron Majerus won 9-6 over Caleb Busson. The win was Majerus' first MAC win of the season and just the second of his career. He made two takedowns in the first period and then a single takedown in the second and third periods for one of his better offensive outings of the season.

Buffalo just missed a shutout of the Huskies, as three overtime matches went in favor of Northern Illinois, at 125, 184 and heavyweight. It was the final home meet for three UB seniors - John Crisafulli, Brian Sheehan and Jimmy Hamel. The Bulls end the regular season with a 9-8 record, 2-3 in the MAC. The team will take a week to prepare for the MAC championship, to be hosted by Northern Illinois this season.

Lewandowski Named UB Athlete of the Week

Mark Lewandowski of the wrestling team scored a pair of major decision victories in matches against MAC rivals Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. Against the Eagles, he defeated Aaron Sulzer, 8-0, scoring two takedowns and two near-fall points. In his match against Ryan Cubberly of the 25th-ranked Chippewas, Lewandowski again won 8-0. For the season, Lewandowski is 27-11 overall and 4-0 in MAC dual meets. He is currently ranked 27th in the NCAA Coaches Panel Ranking.

Buffalo Loses to No. 25 Central Michigan, 19-14

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - In a dual that came down to the very last matchups, the Buffalo Bulls lost a hotly contested dual on the road to the Central Michigan Chippewas Sunday afternoon, 19-14.

The Bulls found themselves in an early hole, trailing 9-0 after the first three matches. It sooned roared back after Desi Green (11-3) and Mark Lewandowski (8-0) earned major decisions in the 149- and 157-pound bouts. It marked the second straight dual that Lewandowski won a major. John-Martin Cannon soon followed with a 6-4 decision over Eric Cubberly to give Buffalo an 11-9 lead.
The two squads then traded decisions, with Ron Majerus losing to seventh-ranked Ben Bennett before Jimmy Hamel won 5-3 at 184 pounds to give the Bulls a 14-13 lead with just two matches remaining. The Chippewas won both to overtake Buffalo and win.
The loss drops Buffalo to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in Mid American Conference action. The regular season will draw to a close next Sunday with the Bulls hosting Northern Illinois at Alumni Arena. The match will not only be senior day for departing wrestlers Jimmy Hamel, Brian Sheehan and John Crisafulli, but it will also be the second annual Takedown Cancer Event. Bulls Earn First MAC Win, Top Eastern Michigan 20-12

BUFFALO, NY - Spurred on by five straight wins in the first half of the match, the Buffalo wrestling team broke in to the Mid American Conference win column Wednesday evening with a 20-12 win over Eastern Michigan at Alumni Arena.
After dropping the first match, the Bulls took control, starting with Kevin Smith at 133 pounds. The junior just missed a pin but used two takedowns and three near fall points to post a 10-5 win. With the win, Smith now has a team-leading 30 wins, the most in a single season the Mexico, NY native has ever won.
At 141 pounds, Chris Conti continued his MAC hot streak with a 3-0 win over Mike Leholm. The Fredonia, NY sophomore now is 2-1 in conference action and an impressive 5-2 in dual meets overall.
"He (Conti) is out there wrestling hard, he's out there wrestling smart and he's winning MAC dual meets for us and those are the toughest one's to win," head coach Jim Beichner said. "We're very proud of him."
Desi Green continues to dominate in conference action, winning 5-3 over Corey Phillips. The junior now sits at 96 career wins and is now 3-0 in the MAC this season and 9-1 in the MAC for his career.
The team really broke away in the 157 and 165 pound bouts. Mark Lewandowski (157) continued his breakout season with a 8-0 major decision over Aaron Sulzer. The Depew, NY native used two takedowns, two near fall points and riding time to pull out a big decision.
John-Martin Cannon one-upped his teammate in the very next match, starting fast from the first whistle and blowing out his opponent 18-8, with his opponent's only points coming from escapes. The junior had eight takedowns and eclipsed the century mark in takedowns for his career in the process.
"He (Cannon) isn't where he wants to be at this time. He has wrestled 17 or 18 guys in the top 32 in the country he's had one of the most difficult schedules of anyone in that weight class," Beichner said. "Tonight he woke up. He said enough is enough and I'm going to go out there and wrestle. We hope that we see this for the rest of the season because that's the John-Martin we know."
Jimmy Hamel put the icing on the cake with a strong showing at 184 pounds, just missing a major decision by beating Khodar Hoballah 9-2. Hamel dictated the pace throughout the match and won career match 116 in the process.
After snapping a two-match losing streak, Buffalo (8-7, 1-2 MAC) will hit the road for another critical MAC dual as it will face Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at 1pm. The Chippewas were upset most recently by Ohio, who used two pins to beat CMU 21-17. The team was ranked 12 nationally in the most recent polls and is 5-8 overall (0-1 MAC).

Takedown Cancer 2011

Tickets are only $10 each and proceeds benefit the Jeff Parker Foundation and Carly's Club of WNY. Prizes are as follows: 1st- 58" Panasonic plasma HDTV; 2nd- Apple iPad; 3rd- Arnold Schwarzenegger autographed collector’s item.

The event will take place at the final home dual of the season vs. Northern Illinois.

Winners need not be present to win, but for anyone who attends, there will also be two Chinese auctions taking place. One of the auctions will be for restaurant gift cards, baskets, etc. and the other one will be for autographed memorabilia.

Preview: UB vs. EMU

Tonight, we will wrestle EMU at Alumni Arena at 7PM. The match will be live on Time Warner Cable. This marks the first time that UB Wrestling has been live on cable. Here is the preview of EMU's Team.

125 - Jared Germaine is one of EMU's better wrestlers and is one of their captains. He is a redshirt freshman with a 13-4 record on the season. He was ranked #31 in the country on the NCAA Coaches Panel Ranking two weeks ago. Germaine has won eight of his last nine matches and also placed in the early season EMU Open. He redshirted last year and went 19-7 while placing in a lot of open tournaments.

133 - Filiberto Colon leads the team in wins with 20 wins. He sits at 20-9 currently and is a junior that transfered to EMU this season from Rider. He won the EMU Open and placed 4t hat the MSU Open. He is tough in front head locks and underhooks.

141 - Mike Leholm is a redshirt freshman with a 13-12 record. He placed a very strong 2nd at the early season EMU Open and 4th at the MSU Open. Leholm redshirted and went 17-7 last season and placed at a bunch of open tournaments. He likes to wrestle out of an underhook.

149 - Corey Phillips is a redshirt junior with a 9-10 record. He was 2nd at the EMU Open and was named as one of EMU's captains. Phillips won 12 matches last year as a starter for EMU.

157 - Aaron Sulzer is 15-9 on the season and is a redshirt sophomore. He placed 2nd at the EMU Open and is also a captain of the team. He started last season and posted 15 wins. Sulzer is solid in almost all positions.

165 - Nick Hendrick is one of only two seniors in EMU's young line-up. He is a 5th-year senior wit ha 12-11 record. He won 11 matches last year as the starter.

174 - Chris Eggert is a redshirt sophomore with a 13-12 record on the season. He placed 5th at the EMU Open. Eggert went 10-8 during his redshirt year last season.

184 - Khodar Hoballah is a redshirt freshman with a 10-9 record. He placed 2nd at the EMU Open. He went 9-9 as a reshirt last year.

197 - Nick Whitenburg is a redshirt freshman. He is nationally ranked at #33 in the NCAA Coaches Panel Ranking from two weeks ago. He finished 3rd at the EMU Open this year and sports a 13-7 record. Whitenburg went 15-4 during his redshirt year last year and placed in several open tournaments. He is tough on the mat and is best from top.

HWT - David Wade is the team leader and captain. He is a 5th-year senior and returning National Qualifier after finishing 2nd in the MAC last year. He was ranked #23 in the NCAA Coaches Panel Ranking two weeks ago. This week, he checks in at #19 on intermatwrestle.com's national ranking. He placed 2nd at the huge Penn State Open. He has a 17-6 record currently and went 21-16 last season. Wade is tough on top and has good high shots.

Buffalo Falls to #15 Kent State

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo men's wrestling team had another fast start Sunday afternoon against Kent State, but a controversial loss and other close losses led to a 19-13 defeat at the hands of the fifteenth-ranked Golden Flashes.

Chris Conti got the team rolling with an upset win in the 141-pound match, controlling Chase Skonieczny throughout and using a late reversal to seal a 5-2 win to lead off the match. The win was Conti's fourth dual meet win of the season despite being an injury replacement.

In the next match, Desi Green scored an early takedown and held his opponent at bay for a 4-2 win. It was Green's 40th career win in dual meets, moving him in to the top five in program history. The win also moves the Henrietta, NY native's career Mid American Conference record to 8-1.

Mark Lewandowski moved the Buffalo lead to 9-0 after winning his match 6-5. Lewandowski lost his lead late but used his minute of riding time to decide his matchup. The Depew, NY native is now just one of two Buffalo wrestlers to have nine wins in dual meets, the other being Green.

After dropping the next two matches, Jimmy Hamel was caught in a stalemate with Kent State's Casey Newburg. With the match moving in to overtime with a 1-1 score, Hamel was penalized one point for fleeing the mat, giving Newburg the controversial decision just seconds into the first extra period. The loss evened up the score at 9-9.

The Golden Flashes won a major decision at 197 pounds, Brett Correll lost in overtime to thirteenth-ranked Brendan Barlow and Sean Walton lost to tenth-ranked Nic Bedelyon, putting the score at 19-9 in favor of Kent State going in to the final match.

Junior Kevin Smith ended the meet with a dominating performance over Tyler Small, a wrestler who had previously beaten Smith this season. The Mexico, NY native had three takedowns en route to a 12-1 major decision, putting the final score at 19-13.

The team will have little time to rest, however, as it will welcome in Eastern Michigan Wednesday night. The dual will be broadcast on Time Warner Sports. Buffalo sits at 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the MAC. Match time is set for 7 pm.
